Introduction : Shattering the Status Quo : Reading Modernism in the Early Twentieth Century -- Fetishism of the West in Tanizaki Jun'ichirō's A Fool's Love -- Subversions of Ethnicity in Yokomitsu Riichi's Neo-Sensationist Writings -- Kawabata Yasunari's The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa and the Narrative of the Present -- "Love" and (Male) Subjectivity in Hirabayashi Taiko's "In the Charity Ward" -- Coda : Against the National Literary Narrative "This book explores the mass media landscape of early 20th century in order to uncover the real-world subversive impact of formalist works by four major Japanese authors-Tanizaki Jun'ichirō, Yokomitsu Riichi, Kawabata Yasunari, and Hirabayashi Taiko. Through broad surveys of discourses surrounding daily life, the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, urban renaissance, and the sexological rhetoric of love and lust, this study locates ideologies of gender, ethnicity, and nation that flourished in the 1920s. Mitchell then shows how the narrative and linguistic strategies of modernist texts interrogated the innocence of this language, discursively displacing the authority of their claims and disrupting their hold upon people's imagined relationship to daily life. Mitchell elaborates an alternative modernism that challenges the primacy of the Western European model by locating modernist subversion within the local historical developments of I-novel reading practices, commodity culture, and the Great Kantō Earthquake. But the book also helps to expand modernism studies into a more translational dialogue by identifying how modernist texts themselves exposed the global epistemology of East vs. West. By rehabilitating the original nexus between literature and society, Mitchell revives and affirms the essential pedagogical function of modernist fiction to make us aware of how our realities are constructed, and thus how those realities can be changed

Celebrating Sorrow explores the medieval Japanese fascination with grief in tributes to The Tale of Sagoromo, the classic story of a young man whose unrequited love for his foster sister leads him into a succession of romantic tragedies as he rises to the imperial throne. Charo B. D'Etcheverry translates a selection of Sagoromo-themed works, highlighting the diversity of medieval Japanese creative practice and the persistent and varied influence of a beloved court tale. Medieval Japanese readers, fascinated by Sagoromo's sorrows and success, were inspired to retell his tale in stories, songs, poetry, and drama. By recontextualizing the tale's poems and writing new libretti, stories, and commentaries about the tale, these medieval aristocrats, warriors, and commoners expressed their competing concerns and ambitions during a chaotic period in Japanese history.

This text is a wide-ranging account of how women writers have made sense (and nonsense) of pregnancy in postwar Japan. While earlier authors such as Yosano Akiko had addressed the pain and emotional complexities of childbearing in their poetry and prose, the topic quickly moved into the literary shadows when motherhood became enshrined as a duty to state and sovereign in the 1930s and '40s. This reproductive imperative endured after World War II, spurred by a need to create a new generation of citizens and consumers for a new, peacetime nation. It was only in the 1960s, in the context of a flowering of feminist thought and activism, that more critical and nuanced appraisals of pregnancy and motherhood began to appear.
