    At the end of the 19th and start of the 20th century, Jewish artists thought intensively about the influence of their heritage on their work and the notion of "Jewish art." Using the examples of Max Liebermann and Marc Chagall, representatives of Western and Eastern European Judaism, respectively, and the ways art historians responded to their work, this study examines for the first time the concept of "Jewish art." Ende des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts findet eine zunehmende Auseinandersetzung der jüdischen Künstler mit dem Einfluss ihrer Herkunft auf ihre Werke und mit dem Begriff der ‚Jüdischen Kunst’ statt. Am Beispiel von Max Liebermann und Marc Chagall, zweier Vertreter des west- bzw. des osteuropäischen Judentums, und der Reaktionen in der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung auf ihr Werk wird nun erstmals der Begriff der ‚Jüdischen Kunst’ untersucht

    Main description: Conventional wisdom holds that Judaism is indifferent or even suspiciously hostile to the visual arts due to the Second Commandment's prohibition on creating "graven images," the dictates of monotheism, and historical happenstance. This intellectual history of medieval and modern Jewish attitudes toward art and representation overturns the modern assumption of Jewish iconophobia that denies to Jewish culture a visual dimension. Kalman Bland synthesizes evidence from medieval Jewish philosophy, mysticism, poetry, biblical commentaries, travelogues, and law, concluding that premodern Jewish intellectuals held a positive, liberal understanding of the Second Commandment and did, in fact, articulate a certain Jewish aesthetic.     "Ce livre offre un genre d'étude différent dans la recherche sur les illustrations dans les manuscrits hébreux, recherche qui concerne habituellement leur iconographie et leurs sources. Ses sept chapitres montrent que la lecture des illustrations avec un regard dégagé des habitudes, à la lumière des événements de l'époque où elles ont été créées, leur confère une dimension complémentaire en les transformant en outil dans l'étude de l'histoire juive, jusqu'ici fondée sur des textes et des documents d'archives. Dans les exemples étudiés, ce regard révèle qu'imperceptible à la lecture traditionnelle, se cache un reflet des relations complexes entre juifs et chrétiens. Ainsi, les illustrations dans les manuscrits liés au scribe et enlumineur Joël ben Siméon, figure exceptionnelle et captivante, nous montrent le déroulement de sa vie et de sa carrière, et constituent un exemple unique de l'intégration d'un juif dans la société qui l'entoure. On y trouve aussi des expressions visuelles d'une coopération étroite entre des membres de la communauté juive commanditaires de manuscrits, scribes et enlumineurs et des ateliers chrétiens.     I : le premier chapitre traite des rares enlumineurs juifs qui se sont identifiés dans un colophon. Le plus ancien parmi eux a été actif au dixième siècle, au Moyen-Orient, là où naquit l'art du livre hébraïque. Les motifs décoratifs dont il s'est servi proviennent de l'art musulman. Les autres enlumineurs que nous connaissons aujourd'hui furent actifs en Europe occidentale aux quatorzième et quinzième siècles : plusieurs en Espagne et en Italie, et un dans le Brabant, en Ashkénaze
    II : le second chapitre traite d'un recueil de miscellanées écrit et décoré dans le nord de la France, durant le dernier quart du treizième siècle, au premier stade, en Artois, et au deuxième stade à Paris. Là, il a été décoré par trois ateliers qui travaillèrent aussi pour le roi et sa cour. Le plan iconographique inclut des illustrations bibliques, dont certaines ont été choisies du fait de leur sens polémique antichrétien. Cependant, les enlumineurs chrétiens, guidés par un conseiller, changèrent le sens d'origine des illustrations, pour leur donner un sens polémique anti juif. Le côté juif dans la polémique s'exprime malgré tout dans le texte
    III : le troisième chapitre traite des illustrations bibliques dans deux volumes d'un Mahzor du Bad Wurtemberg de la fin du treizième siècle, destiné à une synagogue. Cette fois aussi, le manuscrit a été décoré par un atelier chrétien, et l'enlumineur, guidé par un conseiller, a cette fois encore changé le sens polémique anti chrétien en faisant des modifications très fines. Les illustrations, apparemment juives, renvoient en réalité à la personnalité de Jésus, au dogme de l'Eglise, et à l'infériorité du judaïsme.

    IV : Le quatrième chapitre traite d'une Haggadah selon le rite ashkénaze, créée en Lombardie sous le règne de Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Deux manuscrits lui servirent de modèle : une copie du Tacuinum sanitatis, faite dans l'atelier de Giovannino de' Grassi, qui travailla aussi pour le duc de Milan d'une part, et une Haggadah castillane produite à la fin du treizième siècle d'autre part. D'un côté, le manuscrit montre la présence d'éléments iconographiques qui existent dans le Tacuinum, et dans le cahier des croquis de l'atelier. De l'autre, il fait apparaître la présence d'éléments juifs dans le Tacuinum.

    V-VI : les cinquième et sixième chapitres sont consacrés à Joël ben Siméon, qui depuis longtemps trouble la sérénité des chercheurs des manuscrits hébreux. Ils se proposent, à l'aide des illustrations de ses manuscrits, de reconstituer sa carrière en tant que scribe et enlumineur. Le cinquième chapitre traite du début de sa carrière. Il montre que Joël a travaillé à Bâle, où il s'est totalement intégré à l'art local, et où il s'est élaboré un cahier de croquis fondé sur des modèles locaux, qui trouvent leur source dans différents medium, de feuilles volantes à des tapis muraux. Il s'est servi de ces éléments pour illustrer la Haggadah, tout en les détachant de leLe sixième chapitre traite de la seconde partie de la vie de Joël ben Siméon – son travail en Lombardie, où de scribe et enlumineur itinérant qu'il était, il devint un maître à la tête d'un atelier et influença le développement de la Haggadah italienne. Cette fois, parmi ses sources, se trouvent des manuscrits, des cartes à jouer et une fresque située dans une église. A l'aide de ses apprentis, il décora des manuscrits écrits par d'autres, tout autant qu'il collabora avec des ateliers chrétiens. Ce chapitre montre son degré d'intégration dans la nouvelle communauté juive ainsi que dans la société chrétienne
    VII : le septième et dernier chapitre est consacré à une Haggadah et à tous ceux qui participèrent à sa création : Jacob ben Mattathias, commanditaire de manuscrits et dignitaire de la communauté juive d'Ulm, qui établit le lien entre le scribe Meir Jaffé qui écrira la Haggadah, et Joël ben Siméon et l'atelier de Johannes Bämler qui la décoreront. Ce chapitre montre la présence et la coopération étroite de Joël et de Meir au sein même de l'atelier, la division du travail de décoration entre eux, et l'influence de cet atelier sur le travail de Meir.
