German Jewish girl whose life and death are shaped by the atrocities of World War II...her uncle, who undermines the sureties of his own life in order to fight for Israeli statehood...the Jews of the sixteenth-century Venetian ghetto, trapped both literally and figuratively by rabid prejudice...Othello, newly arrived in Venice...a young Ethiopian Jewish woman resettled in Israel: these are the people whose stories fill The Nature of Blood and who, despite their clear differences, share the weight of memory as burden and sustenance. Their individual voices - delineated with masterful precision - speak out of profound depths of feeling about their worlds and their experiences of persecution, courage, and betrayal But they move beyond the particulars of their own stories as well, their voices twining in an intricate narrative fabric that tells the larger, timeless story of ethnic hatred and racism; of the powers of faith and the shock of its loss; of the cruel patterns of repetition that mar humankind's history, and the crystalline significance of each individual within its sweep

Resting fitfully on the night train to Vienna, Helen Martin discovers that she is, quite literally, losing her senses. Sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste -- all are disappearing, and her own body parts are taking on unfamiliar characteristics. With The Sensualist, the author of The Tattooed Map has created a that weaves together the unseemly history of anatomical art with a gruesome modern-day murder. An illustrated literary sortie into the realm of the body, The Sensualist is a potent exploration of the limitations of looking and the boundless power of seeing. Helen's search for answers, for clues, and for her wayward husband takes her through the capitals of Europe and from the 16th century to World War II to last winter. But her real journey lies within, as each of her five senses comes alive with catastrophic acuity. A deftly woven conundrum of art forgery, revenge, and connoisseurship, The Sensualist is also the chronicle of a ruinous love affair and the history of a lost body.

Following his nation's defeat in the Pacific War, Kuki Kyuzo, a Japanese youth, struggles to return home to Japan from Manchuria. What follows is a wild journey involving drugs, smuggling, chases, and capture. Kyuzo finally makes his way back to Japan but finds himself unable to disembark. His nation remains inaccessible to him, and now he questions its very existence. Beasts Head for Home is an acute novel of identity, belonging, and the vagaries of human behavior from an exceptional Japanese modern author.

This book traces the powerful discourses and embodied practices through which Black Caribbean women have been imagined and produced as subjects of British liberal rule and modern freedom. It argues that in seeking to escape liberalism’s gendered and racialised governmentalities, Black women’s everyday self-making practices construct decolonising and feminising epistemologies of freedom. These, in turn, repeatedly interrogate the colonial logics of liberalism and Britishness. Genealogically structured, the book begins with the narratives of freedom and identity presented by Black British Caribbean women. It then analyses critical moments of crisis in British racial rule at home and abroad in which gender and Caribbean women figure as points of concern. Post-war Caribbean immigration to the UK, decolonisation of the British Caribbean and the post-emancipation reconstruction of the British Caribbean loom large in these considerations. In doing all of this, the author unravels the colonial legacies that continue to underwrite contemporary British multicultural anxieties. This thought-provoking work will appeal to students and scholars of social and cultural history, politics, feminism, race and postcoloniality Introduction: Decolonising and Feminising Freedom -- Part I.
