Eighteenth-Century Aesthetics and the Reconstruction of Art is a collection of essays exploring the rise of aesthetics as a response to, and as a part of, the reshaping of the arts in modern society. The theories of art that were developed under the name of "aesthetics" in the later eighteenth century have traditionally been understood as contributions to a field of study in existence at least since the time of Plato. If art is a practice to be found in all human societies, then the philosophy of art is the search for universal features of that practice, statable in definitions of art and beauty. Despite appearances to the contrary, however, art as we know it - the system of "fine arts" - is largely peculiar to modern society. Aesthetics, far from being a perennial discipline, emerged when it did in an effort both to understand and to shape this new social practice. The essays included in this volume share the conviction that aesthetic ideas can be fully understood when seen not only in relation to intellectual and social contexts but as themselves constructed in history. This is relevant to the concept of art itself, which acquired its current meaning in relation to actual changes in the social uses made of painting, writing, and the other media. Ranging widely in method, with allegiance to no particular theoretical outlook, these studies are both grounded in the history of philosophy and drawn from recent developments in literary theory, art history, and social history, and seek to clarify philosophical issues by taking their historical content into account.

"De Unione Insulae Britannicae (The British Union) is a unique seventeenth-century tract that urged the fusion of the Scottish and English kingdoms into a new British commonwealth with a radically new British identity. It's author, David Hume of Godscroft (1558-c.1630) was a major intellectual figure in Jacobean Scotland and the leading Scottish critic of the anglicizing policies of James VI." "The tract was written in two parts. Published in London in 1605, the first part provides a general outline of the imperative of union. The second consists of political and constitutional proposals whereby such a union might be achieved. Its publication was suppressed and it exists only in manuscript. This is the first translation of the tract."--BOOK JACKET.

This study is an original approach to the notion of "golden mean" in eighteenth-century culture. It bravely combines intellectual history and material history, spanning the fields of philosophy, aesthetics, painting, sociology, optics, music, theater and garden history in an effort to cross the borders of academic writing, in the stylistic treatment of the subject Giancarlo Carabelli examines the "golden mean" both in one of the highlights of Enlightenment philosophy - David Hume's essays and his discussion of the middle station of life and of the standard of taste - and in a modest artifact, "intermediate structure" par excellence: the invisible fence of the ha-ha, that magical "middle," that "simple enchantment," as Walpole called it, that was typical of eighteenth-century "modern garden"
