Bi- and multilingualism are of great interest for contemporary linguists since this phenomenon deeply reflects on language acquisition, language use, and sociolinguistic conditions in many different circumstances all over the world. Multilingualism was, however, certainly rather common already, if not especially, in the premodern world. For some time now, research has started to explore this issue through a number of specialized studies. The present volume continues with the investigation of multilingualism through a collection of case studies focusing on important examples in medieval and early modern societies, that is, in linguistic and cultural contact zones, such as England, Spain, the Holy Land, but also the New World. As all contributors confirm, the numerous cases of multilingualism discussed here indicate strongly that the premodern period knew considerably less barriers between people of different social classes, cultural background, and religious orientation. But we also have to acknowledge that already then human communication could fail because of linguistic hurdles which prevented mutual understanding in religious and cultural terms

Research in Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics has experienced a significant increase in contributions from varying fields of language studies, gaining the attention of scholars from all over the world. This volume aims to showcase the variety of topics relevant to the study of language(s) in colonial, postcolonial and decolonial contexts. A main reason of this variety is that the new paradigm invites and necessitates research on different subject matters such as language typology, grammar and cross-linguistics, meta-linguistics and research on language ideology, discourse analysis and pragmatics. The contributions of this volume are selected, peer-reviewed papers which were partly invited and partly given at the First Bremen Conference on Colonial and Postcolonial Linguistics, held in September 2013 Arabic language guides written for the British Army during the British occupation of Egypt, 1882-1922 / Liesbeth Zack -- Baku Russian : colonial heritage in a post-colonial era / Murad Sleymanov -- Postcolonial language ideologies : writing in Chabacano / Eeva Sippola -- Hybridized discourse markers in Cameroonian French? The example of déjà / Martina Drescher -- Kolonial-Deutsch and Français Tirailleur / Andrei A. Avram -- The status of Dutch in post-colonial Suriname / Janneke Diepeveen and Matthias Hüning -- From Accra to Nairobi : the use of pluralized mass nouns in east and west African postcolonial Englishes / Susanne Mohr -- A colonial grammar of arte / Astrid Alexander-Bakkerus -- The role of domain in face-to-face contact in borrowing / Kzuko Matsumoto -- Representing bicultural knowledge systems and epistemic decolonization / Norbert Schaffeld -- Moanus or Titan?

On Ludwig Cohn's amateur linguistics / Marina Wienberg

Languages belong to the fundamentals of human existence, and many more times than we might assume people actually speak two or more languages. Studying bi- and multilingualism in the Middle Ages and beyond sheds important light on basic sociolinguistic structures determining everyday life and culture in the premodern world. The question of linguistic competence addresses inter-cultural, intra-social, and also inter-gender issues.
