Biographical note: Jan Alexander van Nahl, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Die Erforschung der nordgermanischen Mythologie und Religion hängt wesentlich ab von den Schriften des isländischen Gelehrten und Politikers Snorri Sturluson (1178/79-1241). In über 200 Jahren hat sich diese Forschung disparat entfaltet. Der Autor bietet eine konstruktive Neuorientierung für die Debatten. Er diskutiert kritisch die hochmittelalterlichen Diskurse und liefert auf Basis einer lexematischen Analyse eine Auseinandersetzung mit den überlieferten Fassungen von Snorris Werk. The study of North Germanic mythology has been greatly influenced by the writings of the Icelandic scholar and politician Snorri Sturluson (1178/9–1241). Yet the past 200 years has seen much disagreement among Sturluson scholars. In this book, Jan Alexander van Nahl provides a constructive new way to think about the debates. He casts a critical eye on medieval interpretations and uses a lexematic analysis in examining the versions of Snorri’s work passed down through history.

The Golf War and attempts to prevent the Yugoslav conflict presented further challenges Wie sollte die Welt nach dem Ende des Kalten Kriegs aussehen? Im Zentrum standen für die deutsche Außenpolitik die Ausgestaltung Europas durch den Vertrag von Maastricht und ein Sicherheitssystem, das auch die Balance im Verhältnis zur zerfallenden UdSSR und den Staaten Mittel- und Osteuropas wahren sollte. Weitere Herausforderungen ergaben sich aus dem Golfkrieg und den Versuchen zur Eindämmung des Jugoslawienkonflikts

Uncovering Germany’s colonial legacy and imagination, Susanne Zantop reveals the significance of colonial fantasies—a kind of colonialism without colonies—in the formation of German national identity. Through readings of historical, anthropological, literary, and popular texts, Zantop explores imaginary colonial encounters of "Germans" with "natives" in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century literature, and shows how these colonial fantasies acted as a rehearsal for actual colonial ventures in Africa, South America, and the Pacific.From as early as the sixteenth century, Germans preoccupied themselves with an imaginary drive for colonial conquest and possession that eventually grew into a collective obsession. Zantop illustrates the gendered character of Germany’s colonial imagination through critical readings of popular novels, plays, and travel literature that imagine sexual conquest and surrender in colonial territory—or love and blissful domestic relations between colonizer and colonized. She looks at scientific articles, philosophical essays, and political pamphlets that helped create a racist colonial discourse and demonstrates that from its earliest manifestations, the German colonial imagination contained ideas about a specifically German national identity, different from, if not superior to, most others

While the first decade after the fall of the Berlin wall was marked by the challenges of unification and the often difficult process of reconciling East and West German experiences, many Germans expected that the "new century" would achieve "normalization." The essays in this volume take a closer look at Germany's new normalcy and argue for a more nuanced picture that considers the ruptures as well as the continuities. Germany's new generation of writers is more diverse than ever before, and their texts often not only speak of a Germany that is multicultural but also take a more playful attitude toward notions of identity.
