    The study provides an overview of one of the most intensive phases of German-Polish literature exchange before the reciprocal contacts promoted by Poland until the mid-19th century, not least due to political reasons. The German-Polish literature relations have enjoyed quite a lot of interest in the last decades. However, the previous research concentrates on the one hand cultural-historical, the narrower literary area often far-reaching aspects, such as studies on the echo of the Polish uprisings in Germany, on the other hand on the reception of the work of individual personalities. The present work seeks to close some of the previous gaps by presenting the Polish-German literary relations of that time in their entirety in a condensed overview, focused on the respective literature reception in the form of translations and journalistic reactions under the broadest possible evaluation of German and Polish periodicals. Die Studie bietet einen Überblick über eine der intensivsten Phasen des deutsch-polnischen Literaturaustauschs, bevor sich die bis dahin überwiegend von Polen selbst beförderten gegenseitigen Kontakte um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts nicht zuletzt aus politischen Gründen reduzierten. Die deutsch-polnischen Literaturbeziehungen erfreuten sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten eines recht regen Fachinteresses. Allerdings konzentriert sich die bisherige Forschung einerseits auf kulturhistorische, den engeren literarischen Bereich oft weit überschreitende Aspekte, so in Studien zum Echo der polnischen Aufstände in Deutschland, andererseits auf die Rezeption des Werkes einzelner Persönlichkeiten. Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte einige der bisherigen Lücken schließen, indem sie die polnisch-deutschen Literaturbeziehungen jener Zeit in ihrer Gesamtheit in einem gedrängten Überblick darstellt, konzentriert auf die jeweilige Literaturrezeption in Form von Übersetzungen und publizistischen Reaktionen unter möglichst umfassender Auswertung deutscher wie polnischer Periodika.

It provides a new account that connects aesthetic experience with morality, science, and political society. In doing so, it challenges long-standing teleological narratives that emphasize disinterestedness and the separation of aesthetics from moral, cognitive, and political interests. The chapters are divided into three thematic parts. The chapters in Part I demonstrate the heteronomy of eighteenth-century British aesthetics. They chart the evolution of aesthetic concepts and discuss the ethical and political significance of the aesthetic theories of several key figures: namely, the third Earl of Shaftesbury, David Hume, and Adam Smith. Part II explores the ways in which eighteenth-century German, and German-oriented, thinkers examine aesthetic experience and moral concerns, and relate to the work of their British counterparts. The chapters here cover the work of Kant, Moses Mendelssohn, Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, and Madame de Staël. Finally, Part III explores the interrelation of science, aesthetics, and a new model of society in the work of Goethe, Johann Wilhelm Ritter, Friedrich Hölderlin, and William Hazlitt, among others. This volume develops unique discussions of the rise of aesthetic autonomy in the eighteenth century. In bringing together well-known scholars working on British and German eighteenth-century aesthetics, philosophy, and literature, it will appeal to scholars and advanced students in a range of disciplines who are interested in this topic.

    Die Studie stellt eine Pionierarbeit dar: Sie zeigt erstmals die historischen und systematischen Beziehungen zwischen den Werken Goethes und William James' auf. Dabei wird zum einen die Goethe-Lektüre des US-amerikanischen Philosophen in ihrer Bedeutung für die Genese und Poetizität des James'schen Pragmatismus rekonstruiert. Zum anderen wird die (proto-)pragmatische Dimension von Goethes Werk herausgearbeitet und dieser als literarischer Philosoph und Wegbereiter des angloamerikanischen Pragmatismus exponiert. Mit der Konturierung der vielfältigen diskursiven Relationen zwischen literarischen, philosophischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Wissensordnungen der Goethezeit und jenen der US-amerikanischen Kultur des späten 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts gewinnt der Pragmatismus als transatlantische Denkbewegung Profil. Auf theoretisch-methodischer Ebene leistet die Studie einen wesentlichen Beitrag zum interdisziplinären Forschungsfeld "Literatur und Philosophie", wobei neben der Rolle literarisch verfasster Philosopheme insbesondere auch das epistemische Potential literarischer Verfahren und deren spezifische Funktionen für die Konstitution philosophischer Diskurse und Praktiken demonstriert werden

    Welchen Status kann man der Morphologie heute zusprechen? Ist sie Lehre oder Methode? Der vorliegende Band lotet durch exemplarische Studien die verschiedenen Verwendungsweisen aus. Die zu Grunde liegende Hypothese lautet: Morphologie dient in den Wissenschaften als Paradigma. Die hier versammelten Beiträge zeigen, dass die Morphologie auch in der Gegenwart wissenschaftsübergreifend für scheinbar heterogene Dimensionen und Bereiche eine integrative Funktion gewinnen kann – so wie sie bereits für Goethe als ein einigendes Band zwischen seinen vermeintlich getrennten Praktiken als Dichter, Künstler und Wissenschaftler dienen konnte. What status can be attributed to morphology today? Is it a doctrine or a method? This AZP supplement explores the various uses of morphology through exemplary studies. The underlying hypothesis is that morphology serves as a paradigm in the sciences. The contributions show that even in the present day, morphology can gain an integrative function for seemingly heterogeneous dimensions and fields across the sciences – just as it was already able to serve Goethe as a unifying bond between his supposedly separate practices as poet, artist and scientist.

    Wie stellt die erzählende Literatur das Schaffen fiktiver Künstler dar? Aus dieser Frage entwickelt die Studie ein grundsätzlich neues Verständnis der internationalen Geschichte des Künstlerromans von seinen Anfängen im späten 18. Jahrhundert bis in die Gegenwart. Das Erzählen über fiktive Künstler lässt sich demnach in zwei Phasen teilen, die jeweils bestimmte historische Ursachen haben: eine erste Phase, die sich auf die persönlichen Konflikte malender, dichtender und komponierender Hauptfiguren konzentriert, und eine zweite, in den 1940er Jahren einsetzende Phase, in der Autoren wie Vladimir Nabokov und Thomas Mann den Fokus von den Künstlersubjekten auf Imaginationen ihrer Kunstobjekte verlagern und den Künstlerroman nachhaltig verwandeln. How do novels and stories about fictional artists describe their art? This question leads to a completely new understanding of the history of the artist novel from its beginnings in late 18th c. German literature to its intercontinental present. The study reveals that this history has two distinct phases: a first phase in which artist novels were focussed on the personal predicaments of their protagonists but rarely described the paintings, writings, or compositions these artist figures produced, and a second phase that reverses this genre tradition. In the 1940s, authors like Nabokov and Mann re-invented the artist novel by giving detailed descriptions of imaginary oeuvres and letting the subject of the artist vanish behind the work.

    Die Studie geht von einem engen Zusammenhang zwischen Goethes Geschichtsdenken und seinem Autobiographieverständnis aus, zumal Goethe selbst die Autobiographie (auch) als historiographische Gattung definiert. Sie zeigt, inwiefern Goethes spezifisches Geschichtsdenken Einfluss auf Form, Inhalt und Konzeption seiner Autobiographischen Schriften nimmt bzw. sogar eine enge Wechselwirkung zwischen Geschichtsdenken und autobiographischen Arbeiten besteht. Nach einer theoretisch-methodischen Grundlegung, die zunächst in einem diskursanalytischen Querschnitt den Begriff ,Geschichte' um 1800 kontextualisiert und dann die Gattung Autobiographie im Spannungsfeld zwischen Fiktion und Historiographie situiert, bilden den Hauptteil der Arbeit exemplarische Textanalysen. Im Sinne eines problemorientierten Ansatzes wird dabei einzelnen für Goethes Geschichtsdenken zentralen Aspekten nachgegangen: etwa der Darstellung des erzählten Ichs als ,Spiegel' und ,Motor' seiner ,Epoche'; dem Blick auf die ,Geschichte' des erzählten Ichs sowie auf die vom erzählten Ich erlebte Zeit; der Frage, wie sich Goethe Geschichte erschließt u. a. m

    Die literaturwissenschaftlichen Epochenkonstruktionen Aufklärung und Weimarer Klassik sind in der jüngeren Forschung problematisch geworden. Tatsächlich lässt der literarische Diskurs selbst Phänomene der Gleichzeitigkeit erkennen, die die idealtypische Konfiguration heterogener Epochenstrukturen fragwürdig erscheinen lassen. Dem Generalthema der Kontinuitäten und Diskontinuitäten im literarischen Feld zwischen 1750 und 1800 widmete sich im Sommer 2006 eine am Interdisziplinären Zentrum für die Erforschung der Europäischen Aufklärung in Halle/Saale veranstaltete literaturwissenschaftliche Tagung. Im Zugriff auf Texte u.a. von Lessing, Wieland, Herder, Schiller, Goethe und Moritz problematisieren die Beiträge, wie Denkmuster der Aufklärung im Medium der Literatur sowie des theoretischen Diskurses (Ästhetik) entfaltet und im historischen Konstellationsrahmen der Weimarer Klassik affirmativ aufgenommen, polemisch revidiert und konstruktiv weitergeführt werden. Der diskursive Dialog zwischen Aufklärung und Weimarer Klassik gewinnt seine epochenübergreifende Brisanz sowohl durch das programmatische Innovationsbestreben der Klassiker, als auch durch das vielfältig variierte Anschlussbedürfnis der einzelnen Autoren an die Erfolgsepoche Aufklärung

    Dieses Buch rekonstruiert den ebenso populären wie ungeklärten Inbegriff psychoanalytischer Kulturtheorie: Sublimierung. Lektüren zu Goethe, Schopenhauer und Nietzsche, der »Sublimierung« als Schlüsselkonzept genealogischer Zivilisationstheorie etabliert, bereiten das Studium zu Freud vor: Zunächst konzipiert als Ideal der Befreiung von aller Autorität, meint Sublimierung später zunehmend Unterdrückung der Triebe; am Ende formuliert Freud die Apologie des »Leviathan« im kalten Licht psychologischen Expertenwissens. Weiterhin erörtert der Autor exemplarisch die Rezeption der klassischen Sublimierungslehre durch Thomas Mann, Adorno und Lacan. Sublimierung wird denkbar jenseits von erzwungenem Triebschicksal und Weltabkehr - als via regia zur Erschließung der »wirklichen Welt« und ihres Freiheitspotentials

    Die Auswüchse der technisch-ökonomischen Nutzung der irdischen Natur und die mit ihrer wissenschaftlichen Vergegenständlichung einhergehenden Verkürzungen lassen sich nicht ohne Kultivierung eines ästhetischen Naturverhältnisses einhegen. Unter diesem ist heute weniger denn je die selbstvergessene Kontemplation unberührter Natur zu verstehen. Vielmehr geht es um ein schöpferisches, potenziell lustvolles Erkunden der Möglichkeiten ,kooperativen‘ Zusammenspiels zwischen natürlich-irdischen Vorgaben und menschlichem Gestalten.
