    Die Auslegung der Moderne bleibt ein abgekartetes Spiel, solange sie sich nicht ihrem globalen Komplement zuwendet: der Auslegung dessen, was die Kategorie des sogenannten >Primitiven< für die Moderne bedeutete. Statt den Primitivismus der Moderne allein als Faktum einer illusionären Aneignung und realen Unterwerfung des außereuropäischen Fremden zu behandeln und imagologisch einzufrieren, gilt es dabei, die Praktiken und Fremderfahrungen der Moderne nachzuzeichnen, die aus der kolonialen Mobilität von Personen, Zeichen und Dingen im ersten großen Globalisierungsschub entstanden waren und in der Entgegensetzung von Modernem und Primitivem verhandelt wurden. Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts waren weltweit proportional mehr Menschen unterwegs als heute, und in der Folge entstanden die heute noch erfolgreichsten künstlerischen und musikalischen Synkretismen. Auch der Begriff der Weltliteratur stand zwischen 1870 und 1960 zur Disposition. Was ist aus den weltliterarischen Erwartungen der Moderne geworden, die im Namen des Primitiven formuliert wurden? Aus dem Inhalt: - Die Ashanti folgen dem Motiv der Kästchenwahl, um sich die schriftliche Überlegenheit der Kolonisatoren zu erklären und sie zu konterkarieren. - Kabbo diktiert 1873 dem Linguisten Wilhelm Bleek: >Die Briefe der Buschmänner sind in ihren Körpern.< - Sam Blowsnake zeichnet 1912 für Paul Radin den Tricksterzyklus der Winnebago auf, und berichtet von seinem Leben in der Wild West Show. - Europäische Theoretiker glauben an Totem und Tabu. - Aby Warburg spricht 1923 über den Schlangentanz der Hopi und verläßt das Sanatorium >Belle-Vue<. - Marcel Mauss begründet 1925 den Gabentausch aus römischem Recht und germanischer Literatur. - Gregory Bateson erarbeitet 1943 eine folkloristische Lesart von >Hitlerjunge Quex<, um die Re-Education Deutschlands zu diskutieren. -1952 rechtfertigt Claude Lévi-Strauss die symbolische Verbrennung eines Weihnachtsmanns. -- Jean Rouch filmt 1954 bei Accra den Hund, dem das Fell abgezogen wurde, weil er Europa vorstellte: Gaabi cirey!

Die zwanzig in diesem Band versammelten Aufsätze widmen sich vormodernen Dingkulturen aus archäologischer, ethnologischer, historischer, kunsthistorischer und literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Erzähltexten, womit zugleich die Brücke zur historischen Narratologie geschlagen wird. Moderne dingtheoretische Ansätze, insbesondere das Konzept der agency und das der Mensch-Ding-Vernetzung sowie gabentheoretische Ansätze werden fruchtbar gemacht und reflektiert. Erstaunliche Dinge, signifikante Sachverhalte, dingtheoretisch aufschlussreiche Texte vom Waltharius bis zu Heinrich Wittenwilers Ring werden analysiert und interpretiert. Die untereinander vielfach vernetzten Beiträge widmen sich den folgenden Themen: 1. Objektbiographien, 2. Dinge als Gabe und weitere Formen von Zirkulation, 3. Funktionen und 4. Bedeutungen von Dingen in literarischen Texten, 5. Artifizialität und Ästhetik. This monograph exhaustively investigates the semantic domain of ‘gift’ in Ancient Hebrew, which comprises 28 substantives. The investigation firstly focuses on the syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations that determine the meanings of each individual lexeme and subsequently provides an overall picture of the developments and extensions of the whole lexical field across the different layers of Ancient Hebrew. The investigation sheds new light on the debated issue of the so-called sectarian Qumran writings, by demonstrating that they attest to distinctive patterns of lexical organisation that are not found elsewhere in Ancient Hebrew. The appendix finally discusses the feasibility of drawing concept related conclusions on the basis of linguistic data, thus sketching a possible map of the concept of ‘gift’

    "Both clothing and gifts in the ancient world have separately been the subject of much scholarly discussion because they were an integral part of Greek and Roman society and identity, creating and reinforcing the relationships which kept a community together, as well as delineating status and even symbolising society as a whole. They have, however, rarely been studied together despite the prevalence of clothing gifts in many ancient texts. This book addresses a gap in scholarship by focusing on gifts of elite male clothing in late antique literature in order to show, that when they appeared in texts, these items were not only functioning in an historical or 'real-life' sphere but also as a literary space within which authors could discuss ideas of social relationships and authority.     This is the first book to offer a comparison of these two famous Tudor queens as princesses, suggesting that their early lives need to be more closely examined together. It offers a detailed case study of the four extant dedications that Elizabeth Tudor wrote to accompany manuscript translations that she gave to Henry VIII, his then wife, Katherine Parr, and to Elizabeth's brother Edward (VI of England) as New Year's gifts from 1545 to 1548. Additionally, it seeks to compare Elizabeth with her sister Mary, beginning with pre-accession dedications given to each of them, exploring two of Mary's own translations, moving to their typical patterns of New Year's gift giving, and ending on the textual transmission of their translations that were later published in 1548. It argues that Elizabeth's dedications to her family, while participating in the tradition of giving books, were unique and in the dedications she intended not only to represent her loyalty but also to stabilize her position within the royal family.
