    To what extent do best-selling travel books, such as those by Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Bruce Chatwin and Michael Palin, tell us as much about world politics as newspaper articles, policy documents and press releases? Debbie Lisle argues that the formulations of genre, identity, geopolitics and history at work in contemporary travel writing are increasingly at odds with a cosmopolitan and multicultural world in which 'everybody travels'. Despite the forces of globalization, common stereotypes about 'foreignness' continue to shape the experience of modern travel. The Global Politics of Contemporary Travel Writing, first published in 2006, is concerned with the way contemporary travelogues engage with, and try to resolve, familiar struggles about global politics such as the protection of human rights, the promotion of democracy, the management of equality within multiculturalism and the reduction of inequality. This is a thoroughly interdisciplinary book that draws from international relations, literary theory, political theory, geography, anthropology and history.

    The Rhineland region includes the core regional economy of western Europe, encompassing Belgium, Luxemburg and parts of the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and Germany. Throughout history there have been tensions between this region's roles as a frontier and as western Europe's economic core. Michael Loriaux argues that the European Union arose from efforts to deconstruct this frontier. He traces Rhineland geopolitics back to its first emergence, restoring frontier deconstruction to the forefront of discussion about the EU. He recounts how place names were manipulated to legitimate political power and shows how this manipulation generated the geopolitics that the EU now tries to undo. Loriaux also argues that the importance of this issue has significantly affected the nature of the EU's development and helps condition a festering legitimation crisis.

    Abstract: Unter der Führung Xi Jinpings hat sich die Ausrichtung der chinesischen Außenpolitik deutlich verändert. Es geht Peking heute in erster Linie darum, eine größere Kompatibilität zwischen der sich verändernden Weltordnung und dem chinesischen Einparteienstaat herzustellen. Maßgeblich für den chinesischen Kurs ist das Zusammenwirken der Handlungsprinzipien "Andocken" (Duijie) und "Diskursmacht" (Huayuquan). In Verbindung mit bestimmten strategischen Narrativen wie etwa der "Schicksalsgemeinschaft der Menschheit" (Renlei mingyun gongtongti) ist es chinesischen Kadern möglich, in den Außenbeziehungen des Landes eine einheitliche "China-Erzählung" zu vermitteln. Gegenwärtig ist die internationale Ordnung von einem Interregnum geprägt, in dem etablierte Strukturen nicht mehr die gewohnte Sicherheit und Stabilität gewährleisten können. Vor diesem Hintergrund ergeben sich immer wieder Möglichkeiten für chinesische Akteure, in ihrem Sinne auf die bestehende Ordnung einzuwirken. Die deutsche
