During the Late Middle Ages a unique type of 'mixed media' recycled and remnant art arose in houses of religious women in the Low Countries: Enclosed Gardens. These are retables, sometimes with painted side panels, the central section filled not only with narrative sculpture, but also with all sorts of trinkets and hand-worked textiles. Adornments include relics, wax medallions, gemstones set in silver, pilgrimage souvenirs, parchment banderoles, flowers made from textiles with silk thread, semi-precious stones, pearls and quilling (a decorative technique using rolled paper). The ensemble is an impressive and one-of-a-kind display and presents as an intoxicating garden. In this essay the exceptional heritage of such Enclosed Gardens is interpreted from a range of approaches. The Enclosed Garden is studied as a symbol of paradise and mystical union, as the sanctuary of interiority, as the sublimation of the sensorium (in particular the sense of smell), as a typical gendered product, and as a centre of psycho-energetic creative processes

"This fascinating study considers the poetic and mythological artworks made for elite female monastic communities in Renaissance Italy. Nuns from the patrician class, who often disregarded obligations of austerity and poverty, commissioned sensually appealing, richly made artifacts inspired by contemporary courtly culture. The works of art transformed monastic parlors, abbatial apartments, and nuns' cells into ornate settings, thereby enriching and complicating the opposition of religious and worldly spheres. This unconventional monastic and yet courtly decoration was a new form of art in the way it entangled the sacred and the profane. The artwork was intended to edify both intellectually and spiritually, as well as to delight and seduce the viewer. Based on extensive new research into primary sources, this generously illustrated book introduces a thriving female monastic visual culture that ecclesiastical authorities endeavored to suppress. It shows how this art taught its viewers to use their eyes to gain insights about the secular world beyond the convent walls. "..

This volume contains 11 contributions that open up unknown and unstudied sources for the culture of nunneries in the later Middle Ages using examples from Germany, Switzerland and England. It focuses on the spiritual life of nuns, their education and vocational training, forms of art and piety, legal status position, and aspects of monastic architecture. Edited here for the first time are a treatise or Sendbrief on simony, a Low-German rule for Franciscan nuns, and documents on the reformation history of North-German nunneries. Art-historical contributions discuss the relationship of text and image in vernacular manuscripts. Archaeological and textual studies explore the relevance of claustration for the development of architecture. Furthermore, the history of education and libraries is discussed in studies on the instruction of young Benedictine nuns in Northern Germany, on the libraries of Dominican convents and a Saxon Cistercian nunnery. Contributors include: Wolfgang Brandis, Falk Eisermann, Jeffrey F. Hamburger, Volker Honemann, Annette Kern-Stähler, Margit Mersch, Hans-Jochen Schiewer, Eva Schlotheuber, Peter Schmidt, Werner Williams-Krapp, and Marius Winzeler.
