    Anhand des 1572 erstmalig gedruckten und bis ins 18. Jahrhundert weit verbreiteten Schwankromans Historien von Claus Narren erläutert die Studie den Begriff der natürlichen Narrheit und dessen didaktische Funktionalisierung durch den protestantischen Verfasser Wolfgang Büttner. Mit Hilfe von diskursanalytischen und ritualtheoretischen Ansätzen wird herausgearbeitet, welche Funktionen den als mental different begriffenen natürlichen Narren in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit zukamen. Natürliche Narren repräsentieren eine institutionalisierte Form der Liminalität. Zwar wurden sie zusammen mit den Schalks- bzw. künstlichen Narren an Höfen gehalten, galten aber nicht nur als zu verlachende Objekte, sondern gleichzeitig auch als Wunder, Wunderzeichen und Exempel. Büttners Werk baut auf dieser Narrenkonfiguration auf und integriert sie in sein Werk, das 626 Historien mit jeweils angehängten Lehren umfasst. Im Mittelpunkt steht der ebenfalls historisch nachweisbare ernestinische Hofnarr Claus Narr. Die Narrenfigur dient in den Historien von Claus Narren dazu, Normen und Normenübertretung zu problematisieren, um daraus religiöse und moralische Verhaltensvorschriften zu gewinnen

    In das weite Narrenspektrum des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit gehören die bisher wenig beachteten natürlichen Narren, denen die Studie gewidmet ist. Sie untersucht anhand des im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert weit verbreiteten Schwankromans Historien von Claus Narren den Begriff der natürlichen Narrheit und dessen Verwendung durch den protestantischen Verfasser Wolfgang Büttner. Der Beitrag arbeitet heraus, welche Funktionen die natürlichen Narren im kulturellen Kontext der Zeit hatten. Erläutert wird, weshalb diese Narren verspottet wurden und zugleich als Wunder, Exempel und Wahrsager galten. This study is devoted to the hitherto largely disregarded natural fools, who form part of the broad spectrum of fools in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age. Using the farcical novel Histories of Claus Fool, which was widely read in the 16th and 17th centuries, it examines the notion of natural foolishness and its use by the Protestant writer Wolfgang Büttner. The study develops the functions performed by natural fools in the cultural context of the age. It explicates why these fools were ridiculed while at the same time being regarded as marvels, examples and soothsayers.

    From the late-medieval period through to the seventeenth century, English theatrical clowns carried a weighty cultural significance, only to have it stripped from them, sometimes violently, by the close of the Renaissance when the famed "license" of fooling was effectively revoked. This groundbreaking survey of clown traditions in the period looks both at their history, and reveals their hidden cultural contexts and legacies; it has far-reaching implications not only for our general understanding of English clown types, but also their considerable role in defining social, religious and racial boundaries. It begins with an exploration of previously un-noted early representations of blackness in medieval psalters, cycle plays, and Tudor interludes, arguing that they are emblematic of folly and ignorance rather than of evil. Subsequent chapters show how protestants at Cambridge and at court, during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward, patronised a clownish, iconoclastic Lord of Misrule; look at the Elizabethan puritan stage clown; and move on to a provocative reconsideration of the Fool in 'King Lear', drawing completely fresh conclusions. Finally, the epilogue points to the satirical clowning which took place surreptitiously in the Interregnum, and the (sometimes violent) end of "licensed" folly.     Anhand des 1572 erstmalig gedruckten und bis ins 18. Jahrhundert weit verbreiteten Schwankromans Historien von Claus Narren erläutert die Studie den Begriff der natürlichen Narrheit und dessen didaktische Funktionalisierung durch den protestantischen Verfasser Wolfgang Büttner. Mit Hilfe von diskursanalytischen und ritualtheoretischen Ansätzen wird herausgearbeitet, welche Funktionen den als mental different begriffenen natürlichen Narren in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit zukamen. Natürliche Narren repräsentieren eine institutionalisierte Form der Liminalität. Zwar wurden sie zusammen mit den Schalks- bzw. künstlichen Narren an Höfen gehalten, galten aber nicht nur als zu verlachende Objekte, sondern gleichzeitig auch als Wunder, Wunderzeichen und Exempel. Büttners Werk baut auf dieser Narrenkonfiguration auf und integriert sie in sein Werk, das 626 Historien mit jeweils angehängten Lehren umfasst. Im Mittelpunkt steht der ebenfalls historisch nachweisbare ernestinische Hofnarr Claus Narr. Die Narrenfigur dient in den Historien von Claus Narren dazu, Normen und Normenübertretung zu problematisieren, um daraus religiöse und moralische Verhaltensvorschriften zu gewinnen

    Main description: This study is devoted to the hitherto largely disregarded natural fools, who form part of the broad spectrum of fools in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Age. Using the farcical novel Histories of Claus Fool, which was widely read in the 16th and 17th centuries, it examines the notion of natural foolishness and its use by the Protestant writer Wolfgang Büttner. The study develops the functions performed by natural fools in the cultural context of the age. It explicates why these fools were ridiculed while at the same time being regarded as marvels, examples and soothsayers. Biographical note: Ruth von Bernuth . Sie untersucht anhand des im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert weit verbreiteten Schwankromans Historien von Claus Narren den Begriff der natürlichen Narrheit und dessen Verwendung durch den protestantischen Verfasser Wolfgang Büttner. Der Beitrag arbeitet heraus, welche Funktionen die natürlichen Narren im kulturellen Kontext der Zeit hatten.     From the late-medieval period through to the seventeenth century, English theatrical clowns carried a weighty cultural significance, only to have it stripped from them, sometimes violently, by the close of the Renaissance when the famed "license" of fooling was effectively revoked. This groundbreaking survey of clown traditions in the period looks both at their history, and reveals their hidden cultural contexts and legacies; it has far-reaching implications not only for our general understanding of English clown types, but also their considerable role in defining social, religious and racial boundaries. It begins with an exploration of previously un-noted early representations of blackness in medieval psalters, cycle plays, and Tudor interludes, arguing that they are emblematic of folly and ignorance rather than of evil. Subsequent chapters show how protestants at Cambridge and at court, during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward, patronised a clownish, iconoclastic Lord of Misrule; look at the Elizabethan puritan stage clown; and move on to a provocative reconsideration of the Fool in 'King Lear', drawing completely fresh conclusions. Finally, the epilogue points to the satirical clowning which took place surreptitiously in the Interregnum, and the (sometimes violent) end of "licensed" folly.
