Main description: Around the world under canvas - how much reality can this dream take? The first German ethnography of »ordinary« circumnavigations discusses the life of cruising sailors in a uniquely comprehensive way. Cultural anthropologist and film maker Martina Kleinert investigates the social relationships on board and within the "cruising community", but also the material culture of the cruising yacht itself in the context of mobile culture studies and travel and migration research. And she raises the central question about the historical development anew: Did GPS really change everything, and does this mark the end of an era? Furthermore: Did only young civilization escapists sail in the 1970s, while only wealthy retirement migrants searching for the southern sun remain today?

"Thirteen Rivers' is a tale of pirates, hurricanes, war parties, betrayal, revenge, ship-wreck, kidnapping and murder in a chronicle of events only life itself could inspire. What became of the 208 people who left France bound for La Louisiane? In 1685, French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle and his followers arrived on the Gulf coast seeking the mouth of the Mississippi River, tis fertile farmlands and lucrative profits of a year-round seaport. Instead he found a wilderness inhabited by Karankawa Indians, feral beats and misery, five-hundred miles off course of his intended destination. Was their leader a visionary of his time or a madman? And how was La Salle to know that, in reality, thirteen broad and treacherous rivers sprawled between his fort on the Gulf of Mexico and the might Mississippi. This is their story, retold from the journal pages of First Lieutenant Henri Jontel. --

The first German ethnography of »ordinary« circumnavigations discusses the life of cruising sailors in a uniquely comprehensive way.Cultural anthropologist and film maker Martina Kleinert investigates the social relationships on board and within the »cruising community«, but also the material culture of the cruising yacht itself in the context of mobile culture studies and travel and migration research.

The story of Everett Ruess, who disappeared in the wilderness of Southern Utah in 1934, has for decades been one of the most intriguing mysteries of western lore. A Californian off on an adventure at age 20, he loved poetry, nature, art, and beauty. His family tracked his wanderings for four years, and then Everett disappeared without a trace. In 2008 an old Navajo Indian came forward with information that he had witnessed a murder in 1934, probably that of young Ruess. The bones were recovered, DNA testing was done, National Geographic Adventurer picked up the story, and the family r
