Fragmente zur Geschichte der Patriarchen geben Beispiele für Origenes’ eigenwillige Hermeneutik bei der allegorischen und psychologischen Auslegung. Origen’s work is mainly preserved only in fragments, as he was condemned as a heretic after his death. Thus only a fraction of his commentary on Genesis is still in existence, albeit a relatively large portion of the work and one of particular significance, as the story of the Creation is used to treat major themes in cosmology and views of destiny. Fragments of the history of the Patriarchs provide examples of Origen’s idiosyncratic hermeneutics in its allegorical and psychological interpretation. As environmental destruction begins to seriously affect humans, it has become increasingly relevant to reflect on the essential elements of the Jewish and Christian theologies of creation. The essays in this volume explore key aspects of creation theology, which poses the question of the origin of the world and of man. Creation theology is rooted in the concept of man who owes his existence to God and who is placed in a cosmos which God created as 0good0. At the same time, the essays show that even back in antiquity, the creation discussion held high potential for ideological criticism. In einer Situation, in der sich die Auswirkungen der Umweltzerstörung am Menschen selbst zu rächen beginnen, erlangt die Besinnung auf Grunddaten jüdischer wie christlicher Schöpfungstheologien neue Aktualität. Die Beiträge des hier vorliegenden Bandes zeigen: Schöpfungstheologie stellt die Frage nach dem „Woher0 von Welt und Mensch, sie lebt vom Bild eines Menschen, der sich Gott verdankt und in eine von Gott als „gut0 konzipierten Kosmos gesetzt ist. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich, dass die Rede von der Schöpfung bereits in der Antike ein hohes ideologiekritisches Potenzial entfaltete.

    An engaging introduction to contemporary debates in literary theoryIn the late twentieth century, the common sense approach to literature was deemed naïve. Roland Barthes proclaimed the death of the author, and Hillis Miller declared that all interpretation is theoretical. In many a literature department, graduate students spent far more time on Derrida and Foucault than on Shakespeare and Milton. Despite this, common sense approaches to literature—including the belief that literature represents reality and authorial intentions matter—have resisted theory with tenacity. As a result, argues Antoine Compagnon, theorists have gone to extremes, boxed themselves into paradoxes, and distanced others from their ideas. Eloquently assessing the accomplishments and failings of literary theory, Compagnon ultimately defends the methods and goals of a theoretical commitment tempered by the wisdom of common sense.The book is organized not by school of thought but around seven central questions: literariness, the author, the world, the reader, style, history, and value. What makes a work literature? Does fiction imitate reality? Is the reader present in the text? What constitutes style? Is the context in which a work is written important to its apprehension? Are literary values universal?As he examines how theory has wrestled these themes, Compagnon establishes not a simple middle-ground but a state of productive tension between high theory and common sense. The result is a book that will be met with both controversy and sighs of relief

But what gave rise to the sudden interest in and legitimization of literature in these "vulgar tongues"? Until now, the answer has centred on the somewhat nebulous role of new female vernacular readers. Powell argues that a different appraisal of the same evidence offers a window onto something more momentous: not "women readers" but instead a reading act conceived of as female lies behind the polysemic identification of women as the audience of new media in the twelfth century. This woman is at the centre of a re-conception of Christian knowing, a veritable revolution in the mediation of knowledge and truth. By following this figure through detailed readings of key early works, Powell unveils a surprise, a new poetics of the body meant to embrace the capacities of new audiences and viewers of medieval literature and visual art
