    Europa ist in den vergangenen Jahren zu einem dominierenden Thema geworden. Verantwortlich dafür ist vor allem der Prozess der europäischen Einigung, der zunächst wirtschaftlich, zunehmend aber auch politisch gesehen wurde. Ein kulturell fundiertes Europa-Verständnis hingegen wird zwar rhetorisch immer wieder ins Spiel gebracht, bleibt aber eigenartig unscharf.Dieser Band bringt politische, historische und kulturelle Aspekte des modernen Europas zusammen und trägt so zu einem ganzheitlicheren Bild bei. Sein Titel spielt bewusst mit der Mehrdeutigkeit des Begriffspaars »Fiktion« und »Realität«: Auf der einen Seite kann literarische Fiktion eng mit politischer Realität bzw. Realitätsdarstellung verbunden sein; andererseits ist »Realpolitik« oft mit »Fiktion« - Mythen, Stereotypen, Traditionen - durchsetzt.

    Die Ausgestaltung musealer Erinnerungskultur zu Flucht und Vertreibung deutscher Minderheiten am Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges ist ein umkämpfter Schauplatz - sowohl zwischen Deutschland, Polen und Tschechien, als auch innerhalb der drei Nationen. Vincent Regente arbeitet in seiner Studie die Ursachen für diesen Konflikt am Beispiel von sieben aktuellen Museumsprojekten in Brüssel, Berlin, Danzig, Kattowitz, Görlitz, Aussig und München erstmalig vergleichend heraus. Durch einen konsequent trinationalen Ansatz, eine erste Historisierung des Diskurses nach 1989 und die Berücksichtigung der zunehmenden Bedeutung der Geschichtspolitik der Europäischen Union liefert er umfassende Einblicke in das Thema.

Die Beiträger*innen des Bandes nutzen die Vielschichtigkeit dieses Alltagsmediums, um Bild- und Sprachspuren aus der mehrsprachigen Habsburger Monarchie freizulegen. Wie haben Postkarten den öffentlichen Raum visuell und sprachlich mitgestaltet? Wie die Selbst- und Fremdbilder der dort lebenden Menschen geformt?     Wie ist Milena Jesenská zur Widerständlerin geworden? Diese Frage steht im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung von Lucyna Darowska, die neue Perspektiven interpretativer Biografieforschung innerhalb der politisch-historischen Widerstandsforschung zum Nationalsozialismus erschließt. Ausgehend vom New Historicism setzt sie sich interdisziplinär mit verschiedenen Theorieansätzen auseinander und formuliert dabei den Begriff der widerständigen Praxis neu.Auf dieser an den Forschungsgegenstand angepassten methodisch-theoretischen Basis entwickelt sie Interpretationen widerständiger Handlungen der in literarischen Kreisen bekannten Prager Journalistin Milena Jesenská gegen das NS-Regime How did Milena Jesenská become a member of the resistance? This question is at the heart of Lucyna Darowska's investigation, which unlocks new perspectives in interpretive biographical research within politico-historical research into the resistance to National Socialism. Beginning with New Historicism, she critically engages with various theoretical approaches in an interdisciplinary fashion, in order to approach an understanding of the motivations behind acts of resistance. Using a methodological and theoretical basis that is fitted to the object of research, she develops interpretations of acts of resistance against the Nazi regime by the Prague journalist Milena Jesenská.Research on Milena Jesensk began late, since she was mainly known amongst Western European readers as the anonymous addressee of Franz Kafka's letters. As a critic of communism, in Czechoslovakia she was veiled in silence. The first international conference on Milena Jesensk, which took place in Prague from 20-21 October 2014, showed that the previous biographical works and the international discourse on Milena Jesensk has met with extraordinary interest, and that the intensification of the research on her is urgently required. At the center of this lies both her extensive oeuvre as well as various aspects of her biography. One of the most interesting questions in Milena Jesensk's biography, which transcends research into any one individual, is the question of her resistance. She can be identified at multiple points in her biography with a staunchly resistant position, against national socialism, and from 1936, against communism, which sets Jesensk apart from so many of her contemporaries. Last but not least, the methodological questions around biographical analysis are tightly knitted together with the motivations for the practice of resistance

    In 1624 the Dutch West India Company established the colony of Brazil. Only thirty years later, the Dutch Republic handed over the colony to Portugal, never to return to the South Atlantic. Because Dutch Brazil was the first sustained Protestant colony in Iberian America, the events there became major news in early modern Europe and shaped a lively print culture.In Amsterdam's Atlantic, historian Michiel van Groesen shows how the rise and tumultuous fall of Dutch Brazil marked the emergence of a "public Atlantic" centered around Holland's capital city. Amsterdam served as Europe's main hub for news from the Atlantic world, and breaking reports out of Brazil generated great excitement in the city, which reverberated throughout the continent. Initially, the flow of information was successfully managed by the directors of the West India Company. However, when Portuguese sugar planters revolted against the Dutch regime, and tales of corruption among leading administrators in Brazil emerged, they lost their hold on the media landscape, and reports traveled more freely. Fueled by the powerful local print media, popular discussions about Brazil became so bitter that the Amsterdam authorities ultimately withdrew their support for the colony.The self-inflicted demise of Dutch Brazil has been regarded as an anomaly during an otherwise remarkably liberal period in Dutch history, and consequently generations of historians have neglected its significance. Amsterdam's Atlantic puts Dutch Brazil back on the front pages and argues that the way the Amsterdam media constructed Atlantic events was a key element in the transformation of public opinion in Europe

    Der Orient ist als kulturelle Antithese eine Projektionsfläche europäischer Denkweisen und Phantasmen. Besonders in der französischen und frankophonen Literatur und Kunst ist er seit dem 19. Jahrhundert ein allgegenwärtiges Thema. Die Beiträge des Bandes machen diese Konstruktionen des Orients in ihrer Komplementarität und in der medialen Differenz von bildender Kunst und Literatur sichtbar. Als ein interdisziplinärer Beitrag zur Orientalismus-Debatte werden die literarischen und künstlerischen Werke des sogenannten Orientalismus nicht länger einer versatzstückhaften Ideologiekritik durch Wissenschaft unterzogen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, dass einem Teil dieser Werke die Dekonstruktion des Orients als ästhetische Praxis bereits selbst eingeschrieben ist As a cultural antithesis, the Orient is a site of projections for European mind-sets and fantasies. Since the 19th century, it has been an omnipresent subject, particularly in francophone literature and art. The contributions to this volume uncover these constructions of the Orient in their complementarity and their different manifestations in visual art and literature. As an interdisciplinary contribution to the orientalism debate, the literary and artistic works of so-called orientalism are no longer subjected to a stock critique of ideology through scholarship. Rather, we are shown that many of these books are already engaged in the act of deconstructing the Orient as an aesthetic practice

    The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain saw the proposal of so many endeavors called "projects"—a catchphrase for the daring, sometimes dangerous practice of shaping the future—that Daniel Defoe dubbed his era a "Projecting Age." These ideas spanned a wide variety of scientific, technological, and intellectual interventions intended for the betterment of England. But for all the fanfare surrounding them, few such schemes actually materialized, leaving scores of defunct visions, from Defoe's own attempt to farm cats for perfume, to Mary Astell's proposal to charter a college for women, to countless ventures for improving land, streamlining government, and inventing new consumer goods. Taken together, these failed plans form a compelling alternative history of a Britain that might have been.The Wreckage of Intentions offers a comprehensive and critical account of projects, exploring the historical memory surrounding these concrete yet incomplete efforts to advance British society during a period defined by revolutions in finance and agriculture, the rise of experimental science, and the establishment of constitutional monarchy. Using methods of literary analysis, David Alff shows how projects began as written proposals, circulated as print objects, spurred physical undertakings, and provoked responses in the realms of poetry, fiction, and drama. Mapping this process discloses the ways in which eighteenth-century authors applied their faculties of imagination to achieve finite goals and, in so doing, devised new ways of seeing the world through its future potential. Approaching old projects through the language, landscapes, data, and personas they left behind, Alff contends this vision was, and remains, vital to the functions of statecraft, commerce, science, religion, and literature
