    Style is the material body of lyric poetry, Helen Vendler suggests. To cast off an earlier style is to perform an act of violence on the self. Why might a poet do this, adopting a sharply different form? In this exploration of three kinds of break in poetic style, Vendler clarifies the essential connection between style and substance in poetry. Opening fresh perspectives on the work of three very different poets, her masterful study of changes in style yields a new view of the interplay of moral, emotional, and intellectual forces in a poet's work. Gerard Manley Hopkins' invention of sprung rhythm marks a dramatic break with his early style. Rhythm, Vendler shows us, is at the heart of Hopkins' aesthetic, and sprung rhythm is his symbol for danger, difference, and the shock of the beautiful. In Seamus Heaney's work, she identifies clear shifts in grammatical "atmosphere" from one poem to the next - from "nounness" to the "betweenness" of an adverbial style - shifts whose moral and political implications come under scrutiny here. And finally Vendler looks at Jorie Graham's departure from short lines to numbered lines to squared long lines of sentences, marking a move from deliberation to cinematic "freeze-framing" to coverage, each with its own meaning in this poet's career.

    Author Michael Cohen has found in nineteenth-century British paintings and novels depicting sisters a persistent attempt to subvert a stereotypical construction of women - that which neatly divides all women into either whores or "respectable" women. In many paintings and novels, a female transformation of heroic myth opposes the "necessary whore" of this construction with an attempt to erase the sexual difference between the sisters. The agency of this erasure is a heroic rescue of one sister by the other. In both arts the subject of female rescue is resisted and contested. In painting, Cohen discusses evidence for the attempt at erasure of difference in pictures which make the sexually wayward woman and her respectable counterpart similar or identical in appearance. The important female rescue picture does not get painted but is only approached by painters at midcentury. Part of the evidence is the otherwise puzzling ubiquity of twinned women in Victorian painting In novels, the struggle to erase the difference between women whose sexual experience differs started early. Cohen demonstrates that difference and likeness among sisters was first fully exploited by Austen and Ferrier. In Dickens and Collins, the author has found a retrograde movement in the trend toward erasure of women's sexual difference elsewhere apparent. Dickens magnifies sexual difference between women in his families. Collins makes use of sensational displacements of the respectable woman by a counterpart who is stained in some way - if not by prostitution then by the taint of illegitimacy. In both writers, sexual difference between pairs of women is highlighted rather than effaced. Finally, in the sisters novels of Meredith, Gaskell, and Eliot, this study shows that there are rescues performed by sisters and the transformation of male characters into figurative sisters of the protagonists

    Why did early twentieth-century England produce the kind of writing it did? That deceptively simple question is the mainspring of Lyn Pykett's enquiry. She offers a bold re-examination of the age of modernism, exploring its origins in certain nineteenth-century discourses, particularly discourses about women and gender She challenges the claims of both self-professed modernists and their later academic appropriators that modernism represents a complete break with the past. The history of canonical high modernism has been a story of the removal of the 'great works' of 'literary writing' from the circumstances of their creation: a process that attempts to seal them hermetically into a timeless ideal order of the 'modern tradition'. Focusing on a wide range of authors, including Woolf and Lawrence, Pykett takes issue with this representation of modernism. Her concern, above all, is to return the writing of the early twentieth century to history, and to insist that the written text is as much an historical event as, say, the South African War or Lloyd George's 'People's Budget'. Engendering Fictions both demonstrates the impoverishment of traditional views on the writing of the early twentieth century and opens the way to a new understanding of one of the major periods of English writing

    The provocative notion of a contemporary cross-cultural exchange within the medium of theatre is here imposed upon a dozen contemporary Anglo-American dramatists: Alan Ayckbourn and Neil Simon, Edward Bond and Sam Shepard, David Mamet and Harold Pinter, Caryl Churchill and Maria Irene Fornes, David Hare and David Rabe, Christopher Hampton and Richard Nelson. In each pairing, Ruby Cohn unites a British with an American playwright, exploring similarities both apparent and embedded - similarities that serve as a springboard for the exposure of a more profound, culturally based difference Cohn brings a critical eye of unusual versatility and experience to the reading of these paired playwrights. In Pinter and Mamet, for example, she notes the shared sense of linguistic play. In the plays of Bond and Shepard, on the other hand, she explores the plight of the artist in society; in those of Simon and Ayckbourn, the comic exposition of middle-class mores. Without engaging in cultural reductivism or misleading stereotypes, Cohn demonstrates how such themes lend themselves to differing interpretations in Great Britain and in the United States. A certain transatlantic double focus thus illuminates both the composition and the interpretation of dramatic works in an increasingly globally minded age
