Watson was Lecturer in Biblical Studies at St Martin’s College Lancaster and Senior Tutor for the Carlisle and Blackburn Diocesan Training Institute, Carlisle, UK before returning to Oxford in 2003. Die Studie hinterfragt die These, dass die Hebräische Bibel Anspielungen auf Jahwes Kampf mit dem Chaos enthält. An vielen Stellen werde das Motiv ungerechtfertigt herangezogen, wo eigentlich andere Bildmotive zu erkennen sind. Durch ein sorgfältiges diachronisches Modell, vor allem am Psalter entwickelt, stellt die Autorin Grundzüge der Entwicklung israelitischer Religion in ein neues Licht. Das Chaoskampfmotiv fehlte in der frühesten Periode, während Jahwe die Tötung des Drachens erst in einer monotheistischen Fassung des Motivs zugeschrieben wurde, die um 587 v.Chr. aufkam. This monograph presents a challenge to the view that the Hebrew Bible contains allusions to Yahweh’s battle with chaos, showing how the term has been inappropriately applied in a range of contexts where far more diverse spheres of imagery should instead be recognised. Through the construction of a careful diachronic model (developed with particular reference to the Psalter), the author presents a persuasive case for reversing common assumptions about the development of Israelite religion, finding instead that the combat motif was absent in the earliest period, whilst the slaying of a dragon was attributed to Yahweh only in a distinctive monotheistic adaptation, which arose from around 587 B.C.     Neue naturwissenschaftliche und kulturgeschichtliche Thesen über den Ursprung des Glaubens an mythologisch-volkstümliche Fabeltiere. (Erdmann Steinmetz) "Einhorn, Phönix und Drachen existierten. Sie waren nicht frei erfunden worden", schreibt Reichholf (Evolutionsbiologe) - vgl. "Wann die Menschen sesshaft wurden" (BA 2/09) - und stützt seine Thesen auf eine beeindruckende Zahl eher naturwissenschaftlicher als mythologisch-volkskundlicher Fakten und Vermutungen. Ur- und Vorbilder, Metamorphosen und Umdeutungen von Fabeltieren und anderen religions- und kulturgeschichtlichen Phänomenen (Tierkreiszeichen) sowie folkloristisch Kurioses (Wolpertinger) werden detailreich und mit umfassender Sachkenntnis in ihren oft speziellen und komplizierten Zusammenhängen interpretiert. Im Ansatz kaum vergleichbar mit "Fabeltiere und Dämonen" (BA 1/06), leider keine Abbildungen. "Einiges wird sich dem Härtetest der Kritik stellen müssen", doch Vielschichtigkeit und "Kühnheit" der Argumente Reichholfs sprechen für eine breitere Empfehlung. (2) (Erdmann Steinmetz)
