Firms have increasingly used social media such as Twitter to disseminate corporate disclosures, particularly since the regulation of these platforms by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2013. However, research on social media dissemination is still limited. Even though a few studies have already examined this topic, their findings are not generalizable due to their sole focus on the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), and Australia, countries with similar high disclosure levels. The following dissertation expands this research by investigating Twitter dissemination in Germany, a country with a considerably lower disclosure level than the countries mentioned above. In particular, this study examines (i) how the prevalence of Twitter as a dissemination channel has developed over time in Germany, (ii) what type of firms apply this dissemination channel and, (iii) how this dissemination channel affects information asymmetries between firms and investors. The empirical analysis is based on 2,048 earnings disclosure tweets disseminated by German-listed firms between 2009 and 2019. The descriptive findings show that in 2009 only 7.5 percent of these firms used Twitter for earnings dissemination, while by 2019, this proportion had increased eightfold to 62 percent. Thus, Twitter has become a standard dissemination channel for earnings disclosures among German firms. However, not all firms use Twitter to the same extent. Instead, the logistic regression indicates that firms with a larger size, greater profitability, increased valuation risk, lower investor sophistication, and stronger Twitter commitment are more likely to disseminate earnings on this platform. Further, the multivariate regressions indicate that Twitter dissemination enables firms to reduce information asymmetries, whereby this effect is more pronounced for less visible firms. The results of this dissertation broadly contribute to current corporate disclosure literature. The findings are also of practical relevance to firms and retail investors when deciding whether to use or not to use Twitter.

Yet, as Richard Saller shows, the Natural History offers more insights into Roman ideas about economic growth than any other ancient source. Pliny's Roman Economy is the first comprehensive study of Pliny's economic thought and its implications for understanding the economy of the Roman EmpireAs Saller reveals, Pliny sometimes anticipates modern economic theory, while at other times his ideas suggest why Rome produced very few major inventions that resulted in sustained economic growth. On one hand, Pliny believed that new knowledge came by accident or divine intervention, not by human initiative; research and development was a foreign concept. When he lists 136 great inventions, they are mostly prehistoric and don't include a single one from Rome-offering a commentary on Roman innovation and displaying a reverence for the past that contrasts with the attitudes of the eighteenth-century encyclopedists credited with contributing to the Industrial Revolution. On the other hand, Pliny shrewdly recognized that Rome's lack of competition from other states suppressed incentives for innovation. Pliny's understanding should be noted because, as Saller shows, recent efforts to use scientific evidence about the ancient climate to measure the Roman economy are flawed.By exploring Pliny's ideas about discovery, innovation, and growth, Pliny's Roman Economy makes an important new contribution to the ongoing debate about economic growth in ancient Rome

From a firm’s perspective two competing forces are driving the decision to invest in innovation. On the one hand, innovative performance is an important driver of profitability and growth. On the other hand, investments in innovation suffer from negative externalities, i.e. spillovers to other firms, and hence imitation could be induced. To preempt imitation firms may protect their inventions by means of intellectual property rights, such as patents. By taking out a patent, however, a firm also conveys information about the functioning of the invention to competitors. In this empirical paper, we highlight the trade-off of patenting by setting up a recursive system of equations on knowledge leakage and imitation that, among other factors, may be partly determined by firms’ patenting activity. Thereby we contribute to the debate on the functioning of the contemporary patent system. We find that patenting firms are being less confronted with imitation. The effect of patents on the dissemination of R&D findings is, however, insignificant. Therefore, we conclude that patent disclosures do not significantly harm the appropriability conditions for inventions, but help to protect, at least partly, against imitation, as it has been originally envisaged by policy.
