Contemporary Caribbean Writing and Deleuze maps a new intellectual and literary history of postcolonial Caribbean writing and thought spanning from the 1930s surrealist movement to the present, crossing the region's language blocs, and focused on the interconnected principles of creativity and commemoration. Exploring the work of René Ménil, Édouard Glissant, Wilson Harris, Derek Walcott, Antonio Benítez-Rojo, Pauline Melville, Robert Antoni and Nalo Hopkinson, this study reveals the explicit and implicit engagement with Deleuzian thought at work in contemporary Caribbean writing. "Poetry is composed of sensation: this Deleuze-Guattarian assertion is central to a Deleuzian poetics that provides a fruitful approach to the difficulties of innovative literature and poetry in particular. This book is a clear exposition of a Deleuzian approach to literature that treats the literary text, particularly the poem, as something that exists in its own right. As such poetry is presented as something that must be encountered, actualised and embodied by readers on its own terms, rather than providing access to something else that it represents'. Far from being a hermetic, 'ivory tower' encounter, the Deleuzian poetics of experimental reading reveals sensational significances that are not only philosophical and social but political. What's more, through a close examination of a range of contemporary innovative poems, Jon Clay suggests that a Deleuzian way of reading offers a firm purchase on notoriously difficult texts, providing concepts and a language that aids their understanding."--Provided by publisher

Why do philosophers read literature? How do they read it? And to what extent does their philosophy derive from their reading of literature? Anyone who has read contemporary European philosophers has had to ask such questions. This book is the first attempt to answer them, by considering the 'strong readings' Alain Badiou and Gilles Deleuze impose on the texts they read. Lecercle demonstrates that philosophers need literature, as much as literary critics need philosophy: it is an exercise not in the philosophy of literature (where literature is a mere object of analysis), but in philosophy and literature, a heady if unusual mix

In this important new study, Hamilton establishes and develops innovative links between the sites of postcolonial literary theory, the fiction of the South African/Australian academic and Nobel Prize-winning writer J.M. Coetzee, and the work of the French poststructuralist philosopher Gilles Deleuze. Centering on the key postcolonial problematic of representation, Hamilton argues that if one approaches the colonial subject through Gilles Deleuze's rewriting of subjectivity, then a transcendent configuration of the colonial subject is revealed. Importantly, it is this rendition of the colonial subject that accounts best for the way in which the colonial subject is able to propose and offer instances of resistance to colonial structures of subjectification. In elucidating this claim, the study turns to the fiction of Coetzee. Offering unique Deleuzean readings of three of Coetzee's most theoretically beguiling novels - Dusklands , Waiting for the Barbarians , and Foe - On Representation will prove to be essential reading to those interested in Coetzee studies, the literary terrain of Deleuze's philosophy, and those engaging with contemporary debates in postcolonial literature and theory The Exhaustion of Language as a New Condition of StruggleA Minor Language and a Minor Literature; Conclusion: The Other Question; Works Cited; Index.

Drawing on recent theories of digital media and on the materiality of words and images, this fascinating study makes three original claims about the work of William Blake. First, Blake offers a critique of digital media. His poetry and method of illuminated printing is directed towards uncovering an analogical language. Second, Blakes work can be read as a performative Finally, Blakes work is at one and the same time immanent and transcendent, aiming to return all forms of divinity and the sacred to the human imagination, stressing that all deities reside in the human breast, but it also stres

"Deleuze and Beckett is a collection of essays illuminating similarities between the philosophies and practices of Deleuze and Beckett. The contributors include some of the leading Beckett and Deleuze specialists in the world, and their essays address different ideas and concepts of Deleuzian philosophy as well as a wide range of Beckett's oeuvre, including his novels, short stories, stage and television plays, and film work. The book considers Deleuze's interpretation of Beckett's work and demonstrates that Deleuzian concepts and ideas can be usefully applied to Beckett's texts in order provide a greater understanding of Beckett's characters and their journeys. Deleuze's philosophy helps us to recognize that what has been seen as the private territory of despair, loneliness, and emptiness in Beckett's work masks a world of flow and fluctuation that expresses multiple and heterogeneous possibilities. The concept of fabulation makes a late appearance in Deleuze's career and in only limited detail, but by tracing its connections to other concepts and situating them within Deleuze's general aesthetics, Ronald Bogue develops a theory of fabulation which he proposes as the guiding principle of a Deleuzian approach to literary narrative. Fabulation, he argues, entails becoming-other, experimenting on the real, legending, and inventing a people to come, as well as an understanding of time informed by Deleuze's Chronos/Aion distinction and his theory of the three passive syntheses of time. It offers new conceptual scaffolding to those who have inherited the legacy of colonial privilege, and who now seek to responsibly transform this historical injustice. Simone Bignall attends to a minor tradition within Western philosophy including Spinoza, Nietzsche, Bergson and Deleuze, to argue that a non-imperial concept of social and political agency and a postcolonial philosophy of material transformation are embedded within aspects of pos

Space in Theory: Kristeva, Foucault, Deleuze seeks to give a detailed but succinct overview of the role of spatial reflection in three of the most influential French critical thinkers of recent decades. It aims to rectify an unaccountable absence of detailed analysis to the significance of space in their work up until now. Space in Theory argues that Kristeva, Foucault and Deleuze address

"Though Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari were not strictly art historians, they reinvigorated ontological and formal approaches to art, and simultaneously borrowed art historical concepts for their own philosophical work. They were dedicated modernists, inspired by the German school of expressionist art historians such as Riegl, Wölfflin, and Worringer and the great modernist art critics such as Rosenberg, Steinberg, Greenberg, and Fried. The work of Deleuze and Guattari on mannerism and Baroque art has led to new approaches to these artistic periods, and their radical transdisciplinarity has influenced contemporary art like no other philosophy before it. Their work therefore raises important methodological questions on the differences and relations among philosophy, artistic practice, and art history. In 'Art History after Deleuze and Guattari' international scholars from all three fields explore what a 'Deleuzo-Guattarian art history' could be today"--Page 4 of cover
