The terms 'birth' and 'death' have long denoted the apparent boundaries of our biological lives, situating in time the moments of coming to be and passing away. Yet the specific trajectory of a life can surpass its temporal boundaries. Long after the perishing of the body, and of its physical remains, the individual's ethos can endure in the collective memories of survivors and subsequent generations. Such remnants have been created by rituals, reinforced through commemorations and obituaries, and projected through art and architecture. These powerful inducements to remember counter the finality of physical death, bridging the gap between absence and presence. 'Death: From Dust to Destiny', featuring a wide-ranging collection of texts and images together with the author's guiding commentary, offers a reflective meditation on the methods that artists, architects and writers have developed to activate memory, and animate their subjects into a - possibly - unending afterlife. In this process death need no longer be a terminal departure but can become a new form of existence in the minds of others

Memento mori is a broad and understudied cultural phenomenon and experience. The term “memento mori” is a Latin injunction that means “remember mortality,” or more directly, “remember that you must die.” In art and cultural history, memento mori appears widely, especially in medieval folk culture and in the well-known Dutch still life vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Yet memento mori extends well beyond these points in art and cultural history. In Death in Documentaries: The Memento Mori Experience , Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter suggests that documentaries are an especially apt form of contemporary memento mori . Bennett-Carpenter shows that documentaries may offer composed transformative experiences in which a viewer may renew one’s consciousness of mortality – and thus renew one’s life

"We often imagine the Renaissance as an age of exceptional human progress and artistic achievement. But, intriguingly, macabre images proliferated in precisely this period: unsettling depictions of Death personified, of decaying bodies, of young lovers struck down in their prime. These morbid themes run riot in the remarkable array of artworks featured in The Ivory Mirror. Nearly 200 illustrated artworks--from ivory prayer beads to gem-encrusted jewelry to exquisitely carved small sculptures--present us with an aspect of this era that is at once darker and more familiar than we might have expected"-- The Ivory Mirror / Stephen Perkinson -- The Light at the End of the Tunnel : Manuscript Illumination and the Concept of Death / Elizabeth Morrison -- Chicart Bailly and the Specter of Death : Memento Mori in a Sixteenth-Century Estate Inventory / Katherine Baker -- Plates -- List of Plates -- Memento mori Beads : Collecting Histories and Contexts / Naomi Speakman -- The Poetry of Death / Emma Maggie Solberg

In an extraordinary total installation, Gerda Steiner and Jörg Lenzlinger have addressed the motif and significance of the dance of death. On the site of a former cemetery, the original location of Basel's Dance of Death, which was destroyed in 805, they implemented a market situation that conincided with the Basel Autumn Fair. They invited artists from very different domains to create images, urns, models and performances. Each market stall and each offering presented a unique view of death. This richly illustrated publication reproduces manifestations, thoughts and documents pertaining to the dance of death and its significance to society.--Cover
