    Are artists and cultural institutions cultural translators? Which part do concepts such as that of trans-culturality play? The contributions collected in this volume focus on the subject of (trans-)cultural translation and build a bridge between art and the cultural sector, the so-called "cultural turn" being just as relevant as the findings of the latest studies concerning the areas of activity in the cultural sector and management. Besides trans-cultural phenomena in fine arts, music, literature and theater, the authors explore current issues of cultural education at festivals, in museums, theaters, libraries, concert and opera halls. In conclusion, the focus is on processes of cultural exchange and (inter)national cultural managements that also require their players to develop modified thought patterns Sind Künstler und Kultureinrichtungen kulturelle Übersetzer? Welche Rolle spielen Konzepte wie jenes der Transkulturalität? Die Beiträge des Bandes stellen das Thema der (trans-)kulturellen Übersetzung in den Mittelpunkt und schlagen eine Brücke zwischen Kunst und Kulturbetrieb. Dafür ist der sogenannte Cultural Turn ebenso relevant wie neueste Erkenntnisse aus Kulturbetrieb und -management. Neben transkulturellen Phänomenen in bildender Kunst, Musik, Literatur und Theater widmen sich die Beiträge der Kulturvermittlung auf Festivals, in Museen, Theatern, Bibliotheken, Konzert- und Opernsälen.     How Martha Graham became a cultural ambassador : modernist on the frontier -- "The new home of men" : modern Americana goes to Asia and the Middle East -- "Dedicated to freedom" : Martha Graham in Berlin, 1957 -- The aging of a star in Camelot : Israel, Europe, and "behind the Iron Curtain," 1962 -- Triumphing over "exhaustion," 1963-1974 -- "Forever modern" : from ashes to ambassador in Asia, 1974 -- "Grahamized and Americanized" : the defector joins the first lady on the global stage -- "And Martha knew how to play that" : from détente to disco in Jimmy Carter's Middle East, 1979 -- Dancing along the wall : Graham, Reagan, and the reunification of Berlin, 1987-1989. ""I am not a propagandist," declared the matriarch of American modern dance Martha Graham while on her State Department funded-tour in 1955. Graham's claim inspires questions: the United States government exported Graham and her company internationally to over twenty-seven countries in Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Near and Far East, and Russia representing every seated president from Dwight D. Eisenhower through Ronald Reagan, and planned under George H.W. Bush. Although in the diplomatic field, she was titled "The Picasso of modern dance," and "Forever Modern" in later years, Graham proclaimed, "I am not a modernist." During the Cold War, the reconfigured history of modernism as apolitical in its expression of "the heart and soul of mankind," suited political needs abroad. In addition, she declared, "I am not a feminist," yet she intersected with politically powerful women from Eleanor Roosevelt, Eleanor Dulles, sister of Eisenhower's Dulles brothers in the State Department and CIA, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Betty Ford, and political matriarch Barbara Bush. While bringing religious characters on the frontier and biblical characters to the stage in a battle against the atheist communists, Graham explained, "I am not a missionary." Her work promoted the United States as modern, culturally sophisticated, racially and culturally integrated. To her abstract and mythic works, she added the trope of the American frontier. With her tours and Cold War modernism, Graham demonstrates the power of the individual, immigrants, republicanism, and, ultimately freedom from walls and metaphorical fences with cultural diplomacy with the unfettered language of movement and dance"--

    In den letzten Jahren ist der strukturelle Ausschluss von »People of Colour« und »Schwarzen Menschen« durch weiße Kultur- und Bildungsinstitutionen immer mehr in den Fokus künstlerischer sowie auch institutioneller Kritik geraten. Neue Förderinstrumente und Arbeitspraktiken führten oftmals nicht zu nachhaltigen Veränderungen. Zugleich werden immer wieder neue Strategien der Allianzenbildung und solidarischen Praxis initiiert. In den Beiträgen dieses Bandes kommen Künstler_innen, Kurator_innen und Wissenschaftler_innen zu Wort, die ihre Arbeitspraxis in Zusammenarbeit mit Institutionen und Mitstreiter_innen kritisch reflektieren. Das Ergebnis ist eine Bestandsaufnahme verschiedener aktueller Kämpfe zwischen selbstkritischem Lagebericht, Manifest und praxisnahem Handbuch.     Nicht um politische Diskurse geht es hier, sondern um Europa im Spiegel der Kunst: in der Mythologie, der Literatur, der Malerei, der Musik, im Theater und im Film, denn schon seit der Antike und bis in die jüngste Gegenwart hinein ist Europa ein wiederkehrendes Thema in künstlerischen Darstellungen. Das zeigt schon die Gründungsfigur Europa, die phönizische Prinzessin, die verführt und geraubt wurde oder auch selbst verführt hat und deren Bild sich nicht nur auf antiken Vasen und Wandgemälden, Teppichen und Möbelbezügen, sondern ebenso auf Ölgemälden und Lithografien bis hinein ins 21. Jahrhundert findet.
