"I do I undo I redo examines the writing processes of six modernist authors: Hopkins, Yeats, Conrad, Forster, Joyce, and Woolf. Finn Fordham explores how these processes relate to selfhood and subjectivity, both of which came under intense scrutiny during the modernist period. The study addresses several questions: what are the relations between writing and subjectivity? To what extent is a 'self' considered as a completed product like a book? How are selves, if considered as 'in process' or as 'constructs', reflections of the processes of writing? How do the experiences of writing inform thematic concerns within texts about identity?" "Three theoretical and methodological chapters (about 'genetic' criticism, about studies of selfhood within modernism, and the 'effacement' of manuscripts in philosophies of the subject) are followed by chapters on each author. A different topic is linked to each - compression, selection, doubling, hollowing out, multiplying, and class. The study comprises new material from archives, and many fresh ideas stemming from the combination of different critical approaches: genetic, psychological, political criticism, and close reading."--BOOK JACKET

In the first critical study wholly devoted to Joseph Conrad's use of techniques associated with the literary tradition of romance, Katherine Isobel Baxter argues that Conrad's engagement with the genre invigorated his work throughout his career. Exploring the ways in which Conrad borrows from, alludes to, and subverts the tropes of romance, Baxter suggests that Conrad's ambivalent relationship with popular forms like the adventure novel is revealed in the way he uses romance conventions to disrupt narrative expectations and make visible ethical problems with Europe's colonial project. "As nineteenth-century realism became more and more intrepid in its pursuit of describing and depicting everyday life, it blurred irrevocably into the caustic and severe mode of literature better named satire. Realism's task of portraying the human became indistinguishable from satire's directive to castigate the human. Introducing an entirely new way of thinking about realism and the Victorian novel, Aaron Matz refers to the fusion of realism and satire as 'satirical realism': it is a mode in which our shared folly and error are so entrenched in everyday life, and so unchanging, that they need no embellishment when rendered in fiction. Focusing on the novels of Eliot, Hardy, Gissing, and Conrad, and the theater of Ibsen, Matz argues that it was the transformation of Victorian realism into satire that granted it immense moral authority, but that led ultimately to its demise"-- Provided by publisher.
