The intellectual scope and cultural impact of British writers cannot be assessed without reference to their European fortunes. This collection of 20 essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, records the ways in which Macpherson's Ossian has been received, translated and published in different areas of Europe. The Ossian poems caused a sensation on their first appearance in the 1760s. Indeed, there is hardly a major Romantic poet on whom they failed to make a significant impression. The essays brought together in this volume explore the reception of Ossian

The Celtic Revival began more than a century before Yeats and the Irish Literary Renaissance. Keats and Romantic Celtism is the first book to consider the pervasive influence of period Celticism upon Keat's work, from the Druidism that underlies his unfinished epics to the Celtic-derived folklore that his poetry draws upon. Christine Gallant shows that more than two hundred and fifty traditional folklore motifs of the faerie fill his major poems, as well as minor epistolary ones that have been critically neglected

In Modernism and the Celtic Revival, Gregory Castle examines the impact of anthropology on the work of Irish Revivalists such as W. B. Yeats, John M. Synge and James Joyce. Castle argues that anthropology enabled Irish Revivalists to confront and combat British imperialism, even as these Irish writers remained ambivalently dependent on the cultural and political discourses they sought to undermine. Castle shows how Irish Modernists employed textual and rhetorical strategies first developed in anthropology to translate, reassemble and edit oral and folk-cultural material. In doing so, he claims, they confronted and undermined inherited notions of identity which Ireland, often a site of ethnographic curiosity throughout the nineteenth-century, had been subject to. Drawing on a wide range of post-colonial theory, this book should be of interest to scholars in Irish studies, post-colonial studies and Modernism Celtic muse: anthropology, modernism, and the Celtic Revival -- "Fair equivalents": Yeats, Revivalism, and the redemption of culture -- "Synge-On-Aran": The Aran Islands and the subject of Revivalist ethnography -- Staging ethnography: Synge's The Playboy of the Western World -- "A renegade from the ranks": Joyce's critique of Revivalism in the early fiction -- Joyce's modernism: anthropological fiction in Ulysses -- After the Revival: "Not even Main Street is Safe

Can Scotland be considered an English colony? Is its experience and literature comparable to that of overseas postcolonial countries? Or are such comparisons no more than victimology to mask Scottish complicity in the British Empire and justify nationalism? These questions have been heatedly debated in the aftermath of the 2014 referendum on independence and amid a continuing campaign for more autonomy. Gaelic Scotland in the Colonial Imagination offers an introduction to the emerging field of postcolonial Scottish studies, assessing both its potential and limitations to promote further interdisciplinary dialogue. Accessible to readers from various backgrounds, the book combines overviews of theoretical, social, and cultural contexts with detailed case studies of literary and nonliterary texts. Silke Stroh shows how the image of Scotland’s Gaelic margins changed under the influence of the emergence of the modern nation-state and the rise of overseas colonialism Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- Chapter 1.
