Preliminary Material -- The Beginnings, Part I -- The Beginnings, Part II -- Poppies, Forgetfulness, Dreams, Rebels -- Things (Quasi-) Medieval -- War -- The Mother Figure -- On the Way to Todesfuge -- Poetic Devices and Their Consequences -- The Lithographs in Der Sand aus den Urnen -- Abbreviations -- bibliography -- Index of Names -- Index of German Celan Poems Cited. Paul Celan: Studies in His Early Poetry scrutinizes the influences detectable in the poems written during 1938-48. Among German writers, Büchner, Goethe, Gottfried von Strassburg, Gryphius, Mörike, the poet of the Nibelungenlied , Novalis, Rilke, and Trakl all provided motifs that, often repeated, make for a dense network inviting attention to the self-referential and self-revealing patterns in Celan’s early work. In addition, there are many poems that contain motifs gleaned from Greek mythology and/or biblical data. These references, on occasion quite clear, more often so obscure as to be hazy allusions, yield the view that during his first decade of poetic activities Celan becomes increasingly recondite. When these references or allusions stand side-by-side in a given poem, they acquire a surrealistic tint and threaten to withhold clear meaning. Ambiguities, deliberately cultivated in the earliest poems, begin to boomerang and read like so many preludes to the struggles with language evident in the poetry of Celan’s maturity. It is a certainty that Celan reacted quickly, if not immediately, to the events befalling the scenes of his early years (Czernowitz and the forced-labor camp). This phenomenon mandates the view of his poems as so many pieces of autobiography. It thus is inevitable that as early as 1940 he wrote against the backdrop of war, and soon thereafter in the shadow of the Holocaust that was destined to brand his mind forever. This volume is meant for anyone interested in Celan, close reading of modern poetry in general, comparative literature, motif studies, poetic reactions to Holocaust events, or even in a Jew’s concept regarding the role of the deity in the destruction of those for whom the poet speaks

    Notes:

Main description: The ancient Greek lyric poet Simonides of Keos was the first poet in the Western tradition to take money for poetic composition. From this starting point, Anne Carson launches an exploration, poetic in its own right, of the idea of poetic economy. She offers a reading of certain of Simonides' texts and aligns these with writings of the modern Romanian poet Paul Celan, a Jew and survivor of the Holocaust, whose "economies" of language are notorious. Asking such questions as, What is lost when words are wasted? and Who profits when words are saved? Carson reveals the two poets' striking commonalities. In Carson's view Simonides and Celan share a similar mentality or disposition toward the world, language and the work of the poet. Economy of the Unlost begins by showing how each of the two poets stands in a state of alienation between two worlds. In Simonides' case, the gift economy of fifth-century b.c.

Greece was giving way to one based on money and commodities, while Celan's life spanned pre- and post-Holocaust worlds, and he himself, writing in German, became estranged from his native language. Carson goes on to consider various aspects of the two poets' techniques for coming to grips with the invisible through the visible world. A focus on the genre of the epitaph grants insights into the kinds of exchange the poets envision between the living and the dead. Assessing the impact on Simonidean composition of the material fact of inscription on stone, Carson suggests that a need for brevity influenced the exactitude and clarity of Simonides' style, and proposes a comparison with Celan's interest in the "negative design" of printmaking: both poets, though in different ways, employ a kind of negative image making, cutting away all that is superfluous.

This book's juxtaposition of the two poets illuminates their differences--Simonides' fundamental faith in the power of the word, Celan's ultimate despair--as well as their similarities; it provides fertile ground for the virtuosic interplay of Carson's scholarship and her poetic sensibility

This work explores the strategies of semantic, tonal, and metrical transformation that these translators employed to construct singular interpretations of the original texts

Main description: With reference to Celan’s renderings of French poetry, the author discusses the poetics underlying Paul Celan’s translations and the changes it underwent in the course of time. The study concentrates not only on the well-known translations of Rimbaud's »Bateau ivre« (1958) and Valéry’s »Jeune Parque« (1960) but also pays close attention to the hitherto neglected translations of Benjamin Péret (1950), Guillaume Apollinaire (1951–1959), Jules Supervielle (1958–1968), and André du Bouchet (1968). Up to about 1960 Celan employed largely the same stylistic resources in his translations as in his own poetry. In the 1960s, however, we find a parting of the ways. The translations emancipate themselves from Celan’s personal poetic diction, becoming more ›literal‹ and ›faithful‹. This change in translation procedure is interpreted here as a consequence of an immanent contradiction in Celan’s poetics of dialogue

Review text: "[...] Pennone's study brings much new material to the analysis of Celan's translations, openig up fresh paths of inquiry in a thourough and eloquent study."Charlotte Ryland in: Austrian Studies 16/2008

    Notes:

Main description: This is a study of one of the few prose texts by an author much better known for his poetry. It is inspired by Celan's remark that »Gespräch im Gebirg« was written "in memory of an encounter that never happened." Instead of taking the conventional course and treating this remark as a reference to Adorno, the author examines the poetological implications behind it. Though hermetic at first glance, the text yields up a surprising number of its apparent enigmas when subjected to close reading, poetological analysis, intertextual comparison with texts by Adorno, and reference to letters recently published for the first time

Review text: "S[iebert]'s insistance on the primacy of the text, and the reading of it [...], provides an eloquent and convincing case against purely autobiographically informed literary investigation. The volume concludes with some provocative suggestions for further research."In: The year's work in modern language studies 69/2009 "Die Studie wird künftig als Standardwerk zu Celans wichtigstem Erzähltext gelten dürfen."Wolfgang Emmerich in: Germanistik, Band 48/Heft 3-4 (2007)
