KMU in Deutschland waren jedoch etwas stärker betroffen. This study examines the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financing of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we observe an increase in the number of SMEs with financing problems. This is true for SMEs in Germany as well as in other euro area countries. However, SMEs in Germany are affected somewhat more frequently. One main reason for this increase in SMEs with financing problems is declining profits in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic reducing the possibilities of equity financing. In addition, access to debt financing has also become more difficult for affected SMEs. In the further course of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, these financing problems have become less again quite quickly, which is partly due to government aid measures that are - especially in Germany - perceived as being very significant.

This paper examines the impact of the growth in the incidence of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic on workers’ job satisfaction. Using longitudinal data collected in 2019 and 2021 as part of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey, fixed-effects models of job satisfaction are estimated. Changes in the share of total weekly work hours usually worked from home are not found to have any significant association with changes in job satisfaction for men. In contrast, a strong significant positive (but non-linear) association is found for women, and this relationship is concentrated on women with children. These findings suggest the main benefit of working from home for workers arises from the improved ability to combine work and family responsibilities, something that matters more to women given they continue to shoulder most of the responsibility for house and care work

This empirical analysis investigates whether and to what extent social cohesion and the coverage of social protection schemes influence governments' decisions about the stringency of COVID-19 containment policies during the first and second waves in 2020 in Africa. Our results indicate that societal and social factors influenced the stringency of containment policies. Social cohesion has a negative effect on the stringency of containment policies in response to COVID-19 over time. Social protection coverage has a positive effect on the stringency of containment policies in response to COVID-19 over time. States implemented more stringent containment policies in less cohesive societies if they already had social protection schemes in place before the pandemic. Contextual factors mediated these effects. While stringency of containment policies softened over time where levels of democracy, poverty, and inequality were higher, social protection made a mediating difference only in autocratic states and societies with higher poverty. Three contributions of the empirical analysis stand out. First, the conceptual integration of societal and social factors ("societal triangle") provides a novel basis from which to analyse policy responses during external shocks like a global pandemic. Second, to overcome the limitations of current measurements of social cohesion, we use a novel measurement to determine pre-pandemic levels of social cohesion. Third, this is the first cross-national study that addresses a world region, Africa, which has gained little attention in the study of policy responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amid the global COVID-19 crisis, governments worldwide introduced measures to support private enterprises. This study utilizes a newly curated panel database, encompassing the financial records of firms in Peru, to investigate the impact of a substantial governmentbacked loan guarantee program, known as "Reactiva Peru", on the performance of mediumsized Peruvian firms. To address the non-random allocation of loans, our empirical approach combines matching techniques and difference-in-differences methods, drawing upon previous research (Girma et al., 2007; Heyman, 2007). Our findings reveal that the Reactiva program led to heightened liquidity levels among beneficiary firms, albeit with an associated increase in indebtedness. Regarding profitability, the observed impacts on treated companies were not notably positive, except for a modest uptick in the net profit margin. This study contributes valuable insights into the efficacy of public credit support programs during crises, highlighting both their advantages and potential trade-offs for medium-sized enterprises.
