Examining women's access to higher education and participation in the labour force in Lebanon the authors show that the outbreak of the civil war in 1975 marked a turning point. In need of human resources many traditional patterns of women's roles were abolished during the civil war years. Especially in the 1980s the number of educated and employed women from varying social backgrounds increased. However, the gap between women's and men's participation in the labour force remains due mainly to parential preferential treatment. (DÜI-Mjr)
