    Main description: Heiner Müllers (1929–1995) Ende der 70er und Anfang der 80er Jahre entstandenen Stücke sowie deren Inszenierungen stehen im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung. Durch den Bezug auf die Dramengeschichte und den Akt der theatralen Darstellung enthüllt Müller die Theatersituation als ein Modell, das in seiner metaphorischen Verwendung auch den abendländischen Repräsentationstechniken und Denkmustern zugrunde liegt und macht diese transparent. In der Durchkreuzung der gewohnten Wahrnehmungsmechanismen fordern seine Texte auch die Bühne zu einer Revision tradierter theatraler Kommunikationsstrukturen auf

    Main description: This study centers on the plays written by Heiner Müller (1929–1995) in the late 70s and early 80s and their stage productions. By means of explicit reference to the history of drama and the act of theatrical representation, Müller reveals the theatre situation as a model which in a metaphorical form underlies Western techniques of representation and thought patterns in general. In so doing he at the same time makes that situation transparent. By actively interfering with accustomed mechanisms of perception, Müller’s texts are also an appeal to submit traditional structures of theatrical communication to critical review

    Die gegenwärtigen medientechnischen Entwicklungen haben zu einem immensen Aufschwung der Bilder beigetragen. Noch nie wurde so viel mit Bildern kommuniziert wie heute. Wie verständigen wir uns mit Bildern? Wie erzeugen wir in unserem Alltag Sinn mit ihnen? Die Logik des Bildes hat, im Vergleich zu jener der Sprache, in der Forschung bisher wenig methodologische Beachtung gefunden. Vor allem in der Auseinandersetzung mit Medien und Kommunikation fehlt eine prinzipielle Beschäftigung mit Bildverständigung bislang weitgehend. Im vorliegenden Buch wird theoretisch und empirisch die Funktion des Bildes in der wechselseitigen Konstitution von Medien und Alltag geklärt und in einem empirisch fundierten, praxeologischen Kommunikationsmodell verdichtet. Das Modell begründet und ermöglicht empirische Forschung, die gegenwärtige Kommunikation insofern zu erfassen weiß, als u. a. unterschiedliche Medialitäten (Sprache, Bild, Musik ...) in ihrem Eigensinn ebenso wie Social-Media-Kommunikation systematisch beachtet werden. Im Buch werden die entsprechenden forschungspraktischen Schritte, insbesondere der Bild- und Medienanalyse, detailliert ausgeführt

    John Shearman makes the plea for a more engaged reading of art works of the Italian Renaissance, one that will recognize the presuppositions of Renaissance artists about their viewers. His book is the first attempt to construct a history of those Renaissance paintings and sculptures that are by design completed outside themselves in or by the spectator, that embrace the spectator into their narrative plot or aesthetic functioning, and that reposition the spectator imaginatively or in time and space. He takes the lead from texts and artists of the period, for these artists reveal themselves as spectators. Among modern historiographical techniques, Reception Theory is closest to the author's method, but Shearman's concern is mostly with anterior relationships with the viewer--that is, relationships conceived and constructed as part of the work's design, making, and positioning.Shearman proposes unconventional ways in which works of art may be distinguished one from another, and in which spectators may be distinguished, too, and enlarges the accepted field of artistic invention. Furthermore, His argument reflects on the Renaissance itself. What is created in this period tends to be regarded as conventional, or inherent in the nature of painting and sculpture: he maintains that this is a careless, disengaged view that has overlooked the process of discovery by immensely inventive and visually intelllectual artists.John Shearman is William Door Boardman Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard University.
