The Return of the Real presents an original reading of art and theory over the last three decades, with special emphasis to the controversial connections between the two. It also rethinks the relation between historical avant gardes and neo-avant-gardes. The result is an authoritative genealogy of art and theory from minimalism and pop to the present, with important ramifications for prewar studies as well. Against the cliche that contemporary art and theory are condemned to historical pastiche, Foster argues that the avant-garde returns to us from the future, repositioned by innovative work in the present. And he poses this retroactive model of art and theory against the reactionary undoing of progressive culture that is so pervasive today.

This book presents a refreshing new approach to avant-garde art by demonstrating that a genuine core of modernism manifests a positive, joyful outlook. In contrast to those who see disintegration and negativity as the most authentic artistic responses to this century's gloomy zeitgeist, Donald Kuspit and Lynn Gamwell present twentieth-century art that has emotionally and intellectually affirmed life. Lavishly illustrated, their book includes colorful images of paintings, sculptures, decorative arts for the home, and gardens In his essay, "Happiness, Health, and Related Anomalies of Avant-Garde Art," Kuspit characterizes most avant-garde art, such as Duchamp's "readymates," as psychologically adolescent - youthfully rebellious, destructive of the past, and emotionally unstable - but singles out certain rare artists, notably Matisse, as being avant-garde in the mature sense of joining a historical tradition, striking a balance between the self's pursuits of happiness and social reality, and acknowledging suffering while transcending it with positive feelings for life In "Arcadian Impulses in Avant-Garde Art," Gamwell focuses on the intellectual dimensions of health and happiness, noting the large role that nature has assumed as a subject of life-affirming avant-garde art. Certain artists who have been receptive to the broad intellectual climate of modernism - especially the secular, scientific revolution in our understanding of nature - have created therapeutic landscapes, gardens of love, and, most distinctive of the avant-garde art, abstract art that symbolically presents the new cosmology

The study examines texts by Julia Kristeva, Philippe Sollers, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Georges Perec, Italo Calvino and Roland Barthes, stemming largely from the 80s and 90s, with a view to essaying a tour d'horizon of an important transitional period in present-day literature against the background of system-theoretical considerations. It transpires that the apparent paradoxicality of the concept 'post-avantgarde' is a constitutional element in the self-reflection and self-description of a number of authors long established as major representatives of avant-garde groups such as Tel Quel, Nouveau Roman and Oulipo. The (self-)observations of these authors have a number of things in common. Their reflections on the historical limits of a-historical, formalist and self-referential theory-formation and the narrative practice associated with it, and the all-pervading preoccupation with the evolution of literary forms are crucial elements in their quest for an aesthetic program. This engagement with the historicity of literary forms is both a common denominator and a contribution of genuine originality, extending to a philosophical concern with the theory of the subject.

This book addresses the major critical and interpretive issues of contemporary experimental poetic texts. Critical approaches, historical contexts, and basic concepts are surveyed in two introductory essays, while the study of poetic movements in historical context and the chronological trajectory of production of experimental texts are discussed in the first major segment of the volume, Experimentation in Its Historical Moment. The principal topic addressed here is the nature of experimental poetry in revolutionary social contexts. The second major theme, focused upon in the section Experimentation in the Language Arts, is that of language as a vehicle for experiments and cognitive quests, aimed not at the production of truth or social emancipation but at experiential aspects of language and language use. Haroldo de Campos's fragmented poetic prose work Galàxias is a highlighted topic of attention, as are poetic and language experiments in Lettrism, Fluxus, sound poetry, and new technological poetries. The development of the basic tenets of Concrete poetry and current critical perspectives on its status in poetical experimentation constitute the basis of the third section of the book, Concrete and Neo-Concrete Poetry. The relationship of historical Concrete poetry to artistic genres is presented, with special emphasis on Brazil and on contemporary visual writing. The section Memoirs of Concrete, in the context of oral history, includes retrospective accounts by two of Concrete poetry's most renowned editors. The closing section of this book presents statements on the theory and practice of avant-garde poetry by 22 participants in the Yale Symphosymposium on Contemporary Poetics and Concretism
