"The Aesthetic Animal" answers the ultimate questions of why we adorn ourselves, embellish our things and surroundings, and produce art, music, song dance, and fiction. Humans are aesthetic animals that spend vast amounts of time and resources on seemingly useless aesthetic activities. However, nature would not allow a species to waste precious time and effort on activities completely unrelated to survival, reproduction, and the well-being of that species. Consequently, the aesthetic impulse must have some important biological functions. A number of observations indicate that the aesthetic impulse is an inherent part of human nature, and therefore a primary impulse in its own right with several important functions: The aesthetic impulse may guide us toward what is biologically good for us, and help us choose the right fitness enhancing items in our surroundings. It is a valid individual fitness indicator as well as a unifying social group marker, and aesthetically skilled individuals get more mating possibilities, higher status and more collaborative offers. The book is written in a lively and entertaining tone, with beautiful color illustrations. It covers a wide field of aesthetic behaviors from cave art, graffiti, tattoos, and piercings over fashion, design, music, song, and dance. It presents an original and comprehensive synthesis of the empirical field, synthesizing data from archaeology, cave art, anthropology, biology, ethology, behavioral- and evolutionary psychology and neuro-aesthetics

"This edited volume considers the ways in which multiple stages, phases, or periods in an artistic or design process have served to arrive at the final artefact, with a focus on the meaning and use of the iteration, over the end result. In examining iteration, this collection of essays seeks to explore ways of theorising ideas surrounding series of objects, whether the original, the unfinished, the interim object, or the copy, vis-à-vis antecedents and successive exemplars. It asks how a closer look at iterations of a single object-type - whether art, architecture, or design - might reveal new insight into the production of other objects and the production of thought alike. Written by an international team of contributors, offering a range of perspectives, it will look broadly at meaning and insight offered by the iteration, the multiple, and the design process, for historical research and its methods."

In this book the author takes an unusual multi-disciplinary approach to debates about contemporary art and poetry, ideas about the mind and its representations, and theories of knowledge and being. Arts practices are considered as enactments of mind and as transformative modes of consciousness. Ideas drawn from poetics, philosophy and consciousness studies are used to illuminate the conceptual and aesthetic frameworks of a diverse array of visual artists. Themes explored include: the interconnectedness of existence; art as a way of interrogating appearances; identity and otherness; art and the

André Malraux was a major figure in French intellectual life in the twentieth century. A key component of his thought is his theory of art which presents a series of fundamental challenges to traditional explanations of the nature and purpose of art developed by post-Enlightenment aesthetics. For Malraux, art - whether visual art, literature or music - is much more than a locus of beauty or a source of "aesthetic pleasure"; it is one of the ways humanity defends itself against its fundamental sense of meaninglessness - one of the ways the "human adventure" is affirmed. Here for the first time is a comprehensive, step by step exposition, supported by illustrations, of Malraux's theory of art as presented in major works such as The Voices of Silence and The Metamorphosis of the Gods . Suitable for both newcomers to Malraux and more advanced students, the study also examines critical responses to these works by figures such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Maurice Blanchot, Pierre Bourdieu, and E.H. Gombrich, and compares Malraux's thinking with aspects of contemporary Anglo-American aesthetics. The study reveals that an account of art which Gombrich once dismissed as "sophisticated double-talk" is in reality a thoroughly coherent and highly enlightening system of thought, with revolutionary implications for the way we think about art

"How can we know? What does knowledge mean? These were the fundamental questions of epistemology in the 17th century. In response to continental rationalism, the British empiricist John Locke proposed that the only knowledge humans can have is acquired a posteriori. In a discussion of the human mind, he argued, the source of knowledge is sensual experience -- mostly vision. Since visilon and picture-making are the realm of art, art theory picked up on questions such as: are pictures able to represent knowledge about the world? How does the production of images itself generate knowledge? How does pictorial logic differ from linguistic logic? How can artists contribute to a collective search for truth? Questions concerning the epistemic potential of art can be found throughout the centuries up until the present day. However, these are not questions of art alone, but of the representational value of images in general. Thus, the history of art theory can contribute much to recent discussions in Visual Studies and Bildwissenschaften by showing the historic dimension of arguments about what images are or should be. What is knowledge? is as much a philosophic question as What is an image? Visual epistemology is a new and promising research field that is best investigated using an interdisciplinary approach that addresses a range of interconnected areas, such as internal and external images and the interplay of producer and perceiver of images. This publication outlines this territory by gathering together several approaches to visual epistemology by many distinguished authors"--Book jacket
