    In the early twentieth century, art and its institutions came under critique from a new democratic and egalitarian spirit. The notion of works of art as sacred objects was decried and subsequently they would be understood merely as things. This meant an attack on realism, as well as on the traditional preservative mission of the museum. Acclaimed art theorist Boris Groys argues this led to the development of “direct realism”: an art that would not produce objects, but practices (from performance art to relational aesthetics) that would not survive. But for more than a century now, every advance in this direction has been quickly followed by new means of preserving art’s distinction. In this major new work, Groys charts the paradoxes produced by this tension, and explores art in the age of the thingless medium, the Internet. Groys claims that if the techniques of mechanical reproduction gave us objects without aura, digital production generates aura without objects, transforming all its materials into vanishing markers of the transitory present.     Pourquoi penser que les œuvres d’art peuvent être interprétées ? Voir un visage dans Looking glass de Markus Raetz ou voir un symbole de fidélité dans Les Époux Arnolfini de Van Eyck relève d’un même élan : mettre du sens sur ce qui n’en a pas de manière évidente ; autrement dit, interpréter. Le sens est-il découvert ou projeté ? Avant que l’œuvre d’art devienne signifiante, elle est une forme sans contenu. Après, l’œuvre est réduite à un simple support et sa forme devient secondaire. Ainsi, l’interprétation est à la fois nécessaire et problématique. Ce livre propose alors de s’intéresser au moment dynamique intermédiaire : quand l’interprétation est un acte qui n’a pas encore abouti. L’idée principale est que le fondement de l’expérience esthétique se trouve davantage dans le chemin parcouru pendant l’interprétation que dans le message trouvé au bout du chemin. Pour mieux s’en rendre compte, l’interprétation particulièrement dynamique de la réflexivité est un cas privilégié : lorsque le spectateur expérimente une œuvre autoréférente, il est pris dans le vertige du sublime.

Camille de Toledo a invité Aliocha Imhoff et Kantuta Quiros, deux théoriciens de l'art, fondateurs de la plate-forme curatoriale "le peuple qui manque", à élaborer collectivement une pensée pour des temps ouverts, des "temps potentiels", afin de lutter contre cette "réalité" de la finitude, de la mélancolie, de l'absence d'espoir.0Les régimes existants de savoir et de pouvoir au nom desquels nous sommes gouvernés sont essentiellement des régimes de contrainte, de dette, d'achèvement ; il manque à ce monde un principe d'expansion.
