Purdy surveys the volatile state of architectural theory in the Enlightenment, brought on by the newly emerged scientific critiques of Renaissance cosmology, then shows how German writers deployed Renaissance terminology so that 'harmony' & 'unity' became states of consciousness, rather than terms used to describe the built world.

"In one of the first English studies of Thomas Bernhard, Fatima Naqvi focuses on the Austrian author's critique of education (Bildung) through the edifices in which it takes place. His writings insist that learning has always been a life-long process that is helped--or hindered--by the particular buildings in which Bildung occurs. Naqvi offers close readings of Bernhard's major prose works, from Amras (1964) to Old Masters (1985) and brings them into dialogue with major architectural debates of the times. She examines Bernard's interrogation of the theoretical foundations underpinning the educational system and its actual sites. How We Learn Where We Live opens new avenues into thinking about one of the most provocative writers of the twentieth century"--

"Windows - those thinner patches in the external skins of buildings that function as both barrier and channel between the individual and the outside world. They structure the facades of buildings and hence our everyday environment. They display articles of desire, technological progress and economic growth and so reveal new departures in style, aspiration and attitudes to the individual. Through the built environment in which we live, windows even function as building blocks of our personal identity. This volume illustrates how an item so central to our everyday life comes to govern aesthetic discourses concerned with openness and knowledge. It also identifies how, in the German cultural context, the literature, art and architecture of different epochs exploit the window's potential as both physical portal and metaphor for human interconnectedness, self-perception and the transcendence of the self
