Main description: Partition--the idea of separating Jews and Arabs along ethnic or national lines--is a legacy at least as old as the Zionist-Palestinian conflict. Challenging the widespread "separatist imagination" behind partition, Gil Hochberg demonstrates the ways in which works of contemporary Jewish and Arab literature reject simple notions of separatism and instead display complex configurations of identity that emphasize the presence of alterity within the self--the Jew within the Arab, and the Arab within the Jew. In Spite of Partition examines Hebrew, Arabic, and French works that are largely unknown to English readers to reveal how, far from being independent, the signifiers "Jew" and "Arab" are inseparable. In a series of original close readings, Hochberg analyzes fascinating examples of such inseparability. In the Palestinian writer Anton Shammas's Hebrew novel Arabesques, the Israeli and Palestinian protagonists are a "schizophrenic pair" who "have not yet decided who is the ventriloquist of whom." And in the Moroccan Jewish writer Albert Swissa's Hebrew novel Aqud, the Moroccan-Israeli main character's identity is uneasily located between the "Moroccan Muslim boy he could have been" and the "Jewish Israeli boy he has become." Other examples draw attention to the intricate linguistic proximity of Hebrew and Arabic, the historical link between the traumatic memories of the Jewish Holocaust and the Palestinian Nakbah, and the libidinal ties that bind Jews and Arabs despite, or even because of, their current animosity.

The Lure of the Title is a study of novels and short stories written by members of the Palestinian minority in Israel between the years 1948 and 2012. The study attempts to trace the position of the Palestinian dialect: its presence and absence in the titles of works of literature, chapters, etc. Based on a semiotic perspective, the study examines the social, cultural and political role of dialect in the formation of this literature. The focus is on the semiotic triangle of title, text and context in order to clarify the position, role and tendencies of this literature in the Arab and local literary sphere, from the synchronic and diachronic perspectives alike. This is a pioneering study in Palestinian literature, undertaken with contemporary literary-linguistic tools to define key thematic issues in Palestinian literature at the present time. It is hoped that the emerging tapestry of ethnic history, literary poetics and ethno-politics evoked by the recent Palestinian experience brings into view certain deep-rooted tensions in the region, thereby breaking fresh ground in the complementary realms of literature and politics in a Middle Eastern modality. Mahmud Ghanayim relies on a fairly large corpus of novels and short stories written by Najwā Qaʿwār Faraḥ, Emile Ḥabībī, Muṣṭafā Murrār, Ḥannā Ibrāhīm, Muḥammad Naffāʿ, Muḥammad ʿAlī Ṭāhā, Nājī Ẓāhir, Fāṭima Dhiyāb, Riyāḍ Baydas, Suhayl Kīwān, Maysūn Asadī, and ʿAlāʾ Ḥlēḥil. This group of littérateurs represents various periods, genders and religions, here approached from the vantage point of a broad referential space comprising inter alia a nuanced spectrum of ideological, literary and cultural concepts.

Nuʿmān, the village antihero -- 4 Ibn Shalabī, a (pre-)modern trickster -- 5 Laughing together at the hash den -- 6 Laughing together at migration -- 7 A comparative look -- Conclusions -- Bibliography -- Websites and videos -- Index Egyptians are known among the Arabs as awlād al-nukta, Sons of the Jokes, for their ability to laugh in face of adversity. This creative weapon has been directed against socio-political targets both in times of oppression and popular upheaval, such as the 2011 Tahrir Revolution. This book looks at the literary expression of Egyptian humour in the novels of Muḥammad Mustajāb, Khayrī Shalabī, and Ḥamdī Abū Julayyil, three writers who revive the comic tradition to innovate the language of contemporary fiction. Their modern tricksters, wise fools, and antiheroes play with the stereotypical traits attached to the ordinary Egyptians, while laughing at the universal contradictions of life. This ability to combine local and global culture, literary traditions and popular references, makes them a stimulating read in an intercultural perspective. Combining humour studies and literary criticism, this book examines language play and narrative creativity to understand which strategies craft Egyptian literary humour. In doing so, it sheds light on the contribution of humour to literary innovations of Egyptian fiction since the late Seventies, while adding new writers to those who are considered the masters of humour in the Arab novel

The Melodramatic State: Popular Translation and the Erring Nation -- Conclusion: Invader Fictions: National Literature after Translation -- Notes -- Index Widely cited as the first Arabic novel, Zaynab appeared in 1913. Yet over the previous eight decades, hundreds of novels translated into Arabic from English and French were published, creating a vast literary corpus that influenced generations of writers across the Arabic world but that has, until now, been considered only as a curious footnote in the genre's history. In Stranger Fictions, Rebecca C. Johnson offers a transformative new account of modern Arabic literature by incorporating these works into the history the Arabic novel. Considering the wide range of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century translation practices—including "bad translation," mistranslation, and pseudo-translation—Johnson argues that the circulation of European novels and genres in the Arabic world, and the multiple translation practices that enabled it, form the conceptual and practical foundations of Arab literary modernity, which includes the development of Middle Eastern print culture, the cultivation of a reading public, the standardization of Modern Arabic, and the establishment of modern literary canons. Taking readers chronologically through nearly a century of translations published in Beirut, Cairo, Malta, Paris, London, and New York, from the 1835 publication of Qisòsòat Rūbinsòun Kurūzī (The Story of Robinson Crusoe) to translated and pastiched crime stories appearing in the early twentieth-century Egyptian magazines, Stranger Fictions affirms the central place of translation and mistranslation not only in the history of the novel in Arabic but of the novel as a transnational form itself

Sinan Antoon returns to the Iraq war in a poetic and provocative tribute to reclaiming memory Widely-celebrated author Sinan Antoon's fourth and most sophisticated novel follows Nameer, a young Iraqi scholar earning his doctorate at Harvard, who is hired by filmmakers to help document the devastation of the 2003 invasion of Iraq. During the excursion, Nameer ventures to al-Mutanabbi street in Baghdad, famed for its bookshops, and encounters Wadood, an eccentric bookseller who is trying to catalogue everything destroyed by war, from objects, buildings, books and manuscripts, flora and fauna, to humans. Entrusted with the catalogue and obsessed with Wadood's project, Nameer finds life in New York movingly intertwined with fragments from his homeland's past and its present-destroyed letters, verses, epigraphs, and anecdotes-in this stylistically ambitious panorama of the wreckage of war and the power of memory
