In this paper Seed and the Explanation of the Living. A Comparison of Robert Boyle and Isaac Newton, the concept of the seed is considered as the concept of a life-giving element of all things and individuals in a scientific context. This seed was synonymous with the idea of many scientists as the possible first entity from which the living matter of the world was generated. Depending on the idea, this seed sometimes functioned as a metaphorical explanatory model, as an immaterial concept that first created actual matter, and sometimes as factual matter already in the initial stage. Due to the diversity of theories and ideas that were still developing in the 17th century, this work attempts to determine a possible origin of this idea. In the process, the thesis of two lines of tradition developed, starting from Aristotle and Platon's teachings, which subsequent scientists took up and made individually usable for their sciences. The result was a lively reception of this concept and the resulting ideas about the origin of life in the world. Special attention is paid to Robert Boyle's and Isaac Newton's explanation of the origin of life.

"This book explores the role that the verbal, conceptual, and visual language of alchemy played in the literature of the conquest of America and in the rise of an early modern paradigm of discovery in both science and international law. While the roots of the modern 'conquistadorial' attitude toward nature lie in late medieval alchemy, which fused Aristotelian reason with Christian apocalypticism in the militant context of crusade and spiritual conquest, this book argues that the modern idea of what it means to discover something has a colonial history in which conquest legitimated the modern (Baconian) idea of discovery by underwriting it with religious messianism and early modern state power. Thus, the book traces the intellectual and spiritual legacies of such late medieval alchemists as Roger Bacon, Arnald of Villanova, and Ramon Llull in the early modern literature of the conquest of America in texts written by authors such as Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, José de Acosta, Nicolás Monardes, Walter Raleigh, Thomas Harriot, Francis Bacon, and Alexander von Humboldt"--

A detailed account is given here of the life and work of the physician, humanist and Rosicrucian Michael Maier (1568-1622). An outline of the reception accorded to his works up to the present is followed by a closely argued biographical study relegating much of what has been written about him in earlier studies to the realm of fable. The heart of the volume is an annotated edition of Maier's »Cantilenae intellectuales«, a multi-faceted allegorical synthesis of alchemico-literary, musicological, and poetological ideas representing a transition from earlier poetic traditions to the mystic contemplation of nature characteristic of the Baroque period Seit der ersten umfassenderen Bio-Bibliographie Michael Maiers (1568--1622) durch J.B.

"This book explores the role that the verbal, conceptual, and visual language of alchemy played in the literature of the conquest of America and in the rise of an early modern paradigm of discovery in both science and international law.
