The alchemist Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Anṣārī al-Andalusī, known as Ibn Arfaʿ Raʾs (fl. 6th/12th century) is the author of Shudhūr al-dhahab (The Splinters of Gold), one of the most famous poetry collections of Arabic alchemy, which has been the object of no less than thirteen commentaries. The numerous manuscripts of Shudhūr al-dhahab and its commentaries have been read and copied for more than 700 years in various parts of the Islamicate world, from Morocco to India. The very first commentary on Shudhūr al-dhahab was composed by the author Ibn Arfaʿ Raʾs himself. It was transmitted by his disciple Abū l-Qāsim Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī under the title Kitāb Ḥall mushkilāt al-Shudhūr (The Unraveling of the Difficulties of ‘The Splinters’) and is extant in at least 31 manuscripts, of which 27 have been taken into account for this critical edition. This book provides the first edition of Kitāb Ḥall mushkilāt al-Shudhūr, along with an Arabic-English glossary of its alchemical terminology

The literary influence of alchemy and hermeticism in the work of most medieval and early modern authors has been overlooked. Stanton Linden now provides the first comprehensive examination of this influence on English literature from the late Middle Ages through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Drawing extensively on alchemical allusions as well as on the practical and theoretical background of the art and its pictorial tradition, Linden demonstrates the pervasiveness of interest in alchemy during this three-hundred-year period. Most writers -- including Langland, Gower, Barclay, Eramu

Chryseidos Libri III, the Latin didactic poem on alchemy by the Strasbourg physician, alchemist and pharmacist Johannes Nicolaus Furichius (1602?1633) is published in an annotated edition and translation. In a fantastic travelogue which contains retold myths from antiquity, this book describes the transformation of metals. The poet's accompanying notes place this work in relation to Italian and French poetry of the Renaissance. Furthermore, the poet comments on the ongoing discussions of his time about natural history. Chryseidos Libri III, the Latin didactic poem on alchemy by the Strasbourg physician, alchemist and pharmacist Johannes Nicolaus Furichius (1602:1633) is published in an annotated edition and translation. "In Giovanni Aurelio Augurello (1441-1524) and Renaissance Alchemy, Matteo Soranzo offers the first in-depth study of the life and works of Augurello, Italian alchemist, poet and art connoisseur from the time of Giorgione. Analysed, annotated and translated in English for the first time, Augurello's poetry reveals a unique blend of Late Medieval alchemical doctrines, Northern Italian antiquarianism and Marsilio Ficino's Platonism, enriching conventional narratives of Renaissance humanism"--

A detailed account is given here of the life and work of the physician, humanist and Rosicrucian Michael Maier (1568-1622). An outline of the reception accorded to his works up to the present is followed by a closely argued biographical study relegating much of what has been written about him in earlier studies to the realm of fable. The heart of the volume is an annotated edition of Maier's »Cantilenae intellectuales«, a multi-faceted allegorical synthesis of alchemico-literary, musicological, and poetological ideas representing a transition from earlier poetic traditions to the mystic contemplation of nature characteristic of the Baroque period Seit der ersten umfassenderen Bio-Bibliographie Michael Maiers (1568--1622) durch J.B.

"This book explores the role that the verbal, conceptual, and visual language of alchemy played in the literature of the conquest of America and in the rise of an early modern paradigm of discovery in both science and international law. While the roots of the modern 'conquistadorial' attitude toward nature lie in late medieval alchemy, which fused Aristotelian reason with Christian apocalypticism in the militant context of crusade and spiritual conquest, this book argues that the modern idea of what it means to discover something has a colonial history in which conquest legitimated the modern (Baconian) idea of discovery by underwriting it with religious messianism and early modern state power. Thus, the book traces the intellectual and spiritual legacies of such late medieval alchemists as Roger Bacon, Arnald of Villanova, and Ramon Llull in the early modern literature of the conquest of America in texts written by authors such as Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, José de Acosta, Nicolás Monardes, Walter Raleigh, Thomas Harriot, Francis Bacon, and Alexander von Humboldt"--
