When she started working with the aged more than 40 years ago, Ann Burack-Weiss began packing away the knowledge and skills she thought would help when she became older herself. It was not until she hit her mid-seventies that she realized she had packed sneakers to climb Mount Everest, not anticipating the crevices and chasms that constitute the rocky terrain of old age. The professional literature offered little help, so she turned to the late-life writing of beloved women authors who had bravely climbed the mountain and sent back news from the summit. Maya Angelou, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, Joan Didion, Marguerite Duras, and Doris Lessing were among the many guides she turned to for inspiration. In 'The Lioness in Winter', Burack-Weiss blends an analysis of key writings from these and other famed women authors with her own wisdom to create a companion for older women and those who care for them.

This collection consists of eight essays that examine the way narratives determine our understanding of old age and condition how the experience is lived. Contributors to this volume depart from two notions: the concept of »narrative identity« developed by Paul Ricoeur, based on the idea that fiction makes life, and his definition of »trace« as the mark of time. By investigating the traces imprinted in a series of literary works they dismantle the narrative of old age as decline and foreclosure to make it unusable and assemble one of transformation and growth Cover.

By investigating the traces imprinted in a series of literary works they dismantle the narrative of old age as decline and foreclosure to make it unusable and assemble one of transformation and growth.

This study establishes age as a category of literary history, delineating age in its interaction with gender and narrative genre. Based on the historical premise that the view of ageing as a burden emerges as a specific narrative in the late eighteenth century, the study highlights how the changing experience of ageing is shaped by that of gender. By reading the Bildungsroman as a 'coming of age' novel, the book asks how the telling of a life in time affects individual age narratives. Bringing together the different perspectives of age and disability studies, the book argues that illness is already an important issue in the Bildungsroman's narratives of ageing. This theoretical stance provides new interpretations of canonical novels, visiting authors such as Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Samuel Beckett, and Jonathan Franzen. Drawing on the link between age and illness in the Bildungsroman's age narratives, the genre of 'dementia narrative' is presented as one of the directions which the Bildungsroman takes after its classical period. Applying these theoretical perspectives to canonical novels of the nineteenth century and to the new genre of 'dementia narrative', the volume also provides new insights into literary and genre history. This book introduces a new theoretical approach to cultural age studies and offers a comprehensive analysis of the connection between narratology, literary theory, gender and age studies.
