    Den Klischees nach ist das Alter "out": überholt und außen vor. Bei genauerem Hinsehen zeigt sich jedoch, wie wenig solche Vorurteile etwa in der literarischen Kommunikation gelten. Seniorfiguren sind in ihr geradezu zentral, sie stehen für Traditionen ebenso wie für Innovationen und machen dadurch Epoche: Im Zeichen des Alters werden Einschnitte in der Entwicklung des Literatursystems markiert. Paradigmen einer künstlerischen Selbstbeschreibung dieser Art finden sich bei Gottsched, Goethe und Immermann. Mit Luhmanns Systemtheorie lassen sich diese Alterskonzeptionen in den Zusammenhang der literarischen Evolution stellen. Durch die Systemtheorie ist es auch möglich, die Faszination der Weisheit im Kontext der modernen Gesellschaft zu verorten. Wie ist die literarische Idealisierung des Alters zu erklären, wenn es alltäglich an Autorität verliert? Diese Fragestellung wird an Werken des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Realismus Stifters und Storms untersucht.

    Den Klischees nach ist das Alter "out": überholt und außen vor. Bei genauerem Hinsehen zeigt sich jedoch, wie wenig solche Vorurteile etwa in der literarischen Kommunikation gelten. Seniorfiguren sind in ihr geradezu zentral, sie stehen für Traditionen ebenso wie für Innovationen und machen dadurch Epoche: Im Zeichen des Alters werden Einschnitte in der Entwicklung des Literatursystems markiert. Paradigmen einer künstlerischen Selbstbeschreibung dieser Art finden sich bei Gottsched, Goethe und Immermann. Mit Luhmanns Systemtheorie lassen sich diese Alterskonzeptionen in den Zusammenhang der literarischen Evolution stellen. Durch die Systemtheorie ist es auch möglich, die Faszination der Weisheit im Kontext der modernen Gesellschaft zu verorten. Wie ist die literarische Idealisierung des Alters zu erklären, wenn es alltäglich an Autorität verliert? Diese Fragestellung wird an Werken des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Realismus Stifters und Storms untersucht.
