    This study offers a literary history of the war novel in Africa. Coundouriotis argues that this genre, aimed more specifically at African readers than the continent’s better-known bildungsroman tradition, nevertheless makes an important intervention in global understandings of human rights.The African war novel lies at the convergence of two sensibilities it encounters in European traditions: the naturalist aesthetic and the discourse of humanitarianism, whether in the form of sentimentalism or of human rights law. Both these sensibilities are present in culturally hybrid forms in the African war novel, reflecting its syncretism as a narrative practice engaged with the colonial and postcolonial history of the continent.The war novel, Coundouriotis argues, stakes claims to collective rights that contrast with the individualism of the bildungsroman tradition. The genre is a form of people’s history that participates in a political struggle for the rights of the dispossessed

Im afrikanischen Film übernehmen schwarze Schauspieler Rollen, die in Europa und den USA weißen Darstellern vorbehalten sind. Die Rollen der Weißen werden zu einem Imaginationsraum, der eine Inszenierung von Planspielen ermöglicht. Cassis Kilian zeigt: Die afrikanischen Regisseure nutzen die Rollen als Verhandlungsplattform, auf der sie den Umgang mit postkolonialen Gegebenheiten, etwa dem kolonialen Erbe, neokolonialen Strukturen oder der Hegemonie westlicher Medien erproben

Königtümer gelten bis heute als eine Form politischer Kultur, auch wenn ihre Legitimation in der Moderne ständig in Frage gestellt wird. Seit der strukturellen Krise und dem Rückzug des Staates kehren die Könige von Uganda auf ihre Throne zurück. Einst dem Nationalstaat geopfert, gelten sie nun als Hüter von Traditionen und Kultur - und als »Krisenmanager«. Was aber macht sie heute noch zu Königen? Gelten sie weiterhin als sakral? Wie gestaltet sich die Gesellschaft im modernen Königtum in Afrika und mit welchen Mitteln und Medien regiert der König?Raphaela von Weichs' ethnologische Studie verknüpft auf innovative Weise zentrale Debatten der politischen Anthropologie mit aktuellen Ansätzen der Medien- und Religionsforschung. Sie analysiert die Rückkehr der Könige anhand des ältesten Reiches im Westen Ugandas: Bunyoro-Kitara - und zeigt damit die Dynamik politischer Kultur im modernen Afrika

    Das Verhältnis von Repräsentation und Alterität und das Problem des Raums in kolonialen und postkolonialen Zusammenhängen stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie. An der Schnittstelle von Ethnologie, Philosophie und Medienwissenschaft bestimmt Carena Brenner die Funktion der Ethnologie im Kontext dieser Politik des Räumlichen. Die Frage, wie raumübergreifende Bedeutungsproduktionen unter Bedingungen der Globalisierung ethnographisch erfasst und dargestellt werden können, arbeitet sie anhand einzelner Filme heraus. Das Buch überwindet damit einige der Mängel der bisherigen ethnologischen Auseinandersetzung mit Raum The ratio of representation and otherness and the problem of space in colonial and postcolonial contexts are the focus of this study. At the interface of ethnology, philosophy, and media studies, Carena Brenner determines the function of ethnology in the context of spatial politics. Based on individual films, she works out the question of how a pan-spatial production of meaning under conditions of globalization can be ethnographically recorded and displayed. The book thus overcomes some of the shortcomings of previous ethnographic examination of space

Long description: Das Verhältnis von Repräsentation und Alterität und das Problem des Raums in kolonialen und postkolonialen Zusammenhängen stehen im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie. An der Schnittstelle von Ethnologie, Philosophie und Medienwissenschaft bestimmt Carena Brenner die Funktion der Ethnologie im Kontext dieser Politik des Räumlichen. Die Frage, wie raumübergreifende Bedeutungsproduktionen unter Bedingungen der Globalisierung ethnographisch erfasst und dargestellt werden können, arbeitet sie anhand einzelner Filme heraus. Das Buch überwindet damit einige der Mängel der bisherigen ethnologischen Auseinandersetzung mit Raum.

The ratio of representation and otherness and the problem of space in colonial and postcolonial contexts are the focus of this study. At the interface of ethnology, philosophy, and media studies, Carena Brenner determines the function of ethnology in the context of spatial politics. Based on individual films, she works out the question of how a pan-spatial production of meaning under conditions of globalization can be ethnographically recorded and displayed. The book thus overcomes some of the shortcomings of previous ethnographic examination of space.
