"For over two hundred years after its establishment in 1392, the Chosŏn dynasty of Korea enjoyed peaceful and generally stable relations with neighboring Ming China, which dwarfed it in size, population, and power. Such a long period of sustained peace is remarkable in the context of early modern world history, but it is all too easy to simply attribute it to the strength and extent of Chinese cultural and political domination over the Korean peninsula. Chosŏn drew upon classical Chinese paradigms of statecraft, political legitimacy, and cultural achievement. Meanwhile, Chosŏn's regular tribute to the Ming court, its envoys' paeans to Ming imperial glory, all appear as straightforward affirmations of Ming domination. Eternal Empire, Eternal Korea argues they conceal a much more subtle strategy of diplomatic and cultural negotiation. Through an examination of Korea's rhetorical and ritual engagement with the Ming, this book shows how the rulers, diplomats, and interpreters of Chosŏn inserted Korea into the Ming empire's legitimating strategies and asserted themselves as stakeholders in a shared imperial tradition"-- Sixiang Wang demonstrates how ChosÅn political actors strategically deployed cultural practices, values, and narratives to carve out a place for Korea within the Ming imperial order

This collection of essays seeks to analyse historically these influences, connections, and impact from multiple points of view, such as - but not limited to - the links between war and rebellion, the issues of trust and religious violence, early modern university debates on war and peace, the problems engendered by intolerance and the difficult management of tolerance, the delicate matters of politico-religious accommodation and the implementation of peace in towns and contested territories, the reappraisals and changes in the narratives of military prowess and religious fidelity, the role of women in the religious conflicts in the 'long sixteenth century', the porous boundaries (imagined or real) which existed between 'enemies' in times of war and the issues connected to the cohabitation with the 'Other' in times of peace

This study explores the influence of English and Italian itinerant companies on early modern German theatre. A central aspect that mediated this intercultural adaptation is ‘popular culture’, i.e. a network of shared knowledge, which was successfully employed by the English Comedians to meet and shape the taste of their audiences. The analysis of the first and most important collection of playtexts attributed to them, “Engelische Comedien und Tragedien” (1620), according to four parameters (‘Memorialisation’, ‘Hybridisation’, ‘Adaptation’,’ Visualisation’) shows clear influences both from Elizabethan drama and Commedia dell’Arte and offers an innovative transversal perspective on the development of early modern popular theatre in Germany and Austria as a product of intercultural theatricality.
