Zusammenfassung: "PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHY IN VENEZUELA provides a comprehensive inventory of photographically illustrated books published in Venezuela from 1945 to 2017. The research attempts to trace the history of the illustrated book with photographs examining the relationship between photography, literature, graphic design and editing; that is the coexistence of these disciplines in books ... this publication seeks to clarify the directionality of meaning proposed in illustrated books with photography, coffee table books, magazines, brochures, catalogues, posters and photobooks. With this purpose, the book explores subjects through of political, social, artistic ideologies, and also ideas of nation embodied in the corporate or authorial initiatives that shaped them. PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHY IN VENEZUELA presents in short, a transversal and multiple reading that points to the assessment of the work as a whole and to make visible and make the book tangible."--Author's website

"An art historian and a Germanist examine the pictures and text in the four densely illustrated manuscripts of the Sachsenspiegel that were produced in the century following its composition by Eike von Repgow. This is the first extensive study of these famous picture books in English. Using critical frameworks based on performative and feminist theory, the authors give detailed consideration to the social differences reshaped and maintained by text and image. Eike's project, realized in the early 1220s, was concerned with Christianizing secular law, and promoted peaceful interaction between diverse groups, including Saxon men and women, Jews, and Slavic Wends, and he mandated the provision of guardians for the young, the handicapped and the judicially impaired. Yet the later images variously support or subvert his text; changing emphases in the pictures accord with changing attitudes to women and Jews in the period of productionof these works, between c. 1300 and 1365. A burgeoning book culture in the fourteenth century carried Eike's law into the town halls at a time when market churches were being constructed in the judicial and economic hub of German cities, even as synagogues disappeared from town centres during the pogroms. This market complex became part of the material culture of the law. A final chapter traces the popularity and dissemination of the Sachsenspiegel picture-books up to 2010."--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: "Art = New Vision. This formula shaped the avant-garde. With moving images abruptly expanding the boundaries of the visible world, new printing techniques triggering a pictorial turn in graphic art, and literature becoming almost inseparable from visual media we still regard the avant-garde as heyday for modernisms obsession with the eye. But what are the blind spots of this optocentrism? Focusing on the gestures of giving, touching, showing and handcrafting, this study examines key scenes of tactile interaction between subject and artifact. Hand movements, manual maneuvers and manipulations challenge optics and expose the crises of a visually dominated perspective on the arts. The readings of this book call for a revision of an optically obscured aesthetics and poetics to include haptic experience as an often overlooked but pivotal part of the making as well as the perception of literature and the arts"--(Provided by publisher.)

Franz Mehring : literary practice as a socialist form -- Political spontaneism and cultural practice -- Märten and the development of a theoretical position : from reformism to the November Revolution -- The 'German October' and reconfiguration -- Wittfogel's critique of Thalheimer's introduction. Zusammenfassung: "The German Left and Aesthetic Politics examines the articulation of contending materialist aesthetic practices within the ideological fractures of the German Left between the Second and Third International. It is hinged on the major literary critical contributions of Franz Mehring, representative of the Second, and Karl Wittfogel and Georg Lukacs representing the Third. Both parties focussed on the bourgeois revolutionary cultural heritage and how it might provide examples for emulation. However, post the 1918 November Revolution a radical politically avant-garde challenged that tradition, and through figures like the Berlin Dadaists, Piscator's proletarian theatre and later Brecht, with contributions from dissident Marxist intellectuals, like Karl Korsch and Fritz Sternberg, asked other questions and proposed other answers. Revisiting the contexts and contents of these exchanges allows one to understand the serious role allocated to the cultural in constructing the 'third pillar of socialism', its integrative dimension"--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: "Jugendstil, that is Germany's distinct engagement with the international Art Nouveau movement, is now firmly engrained in histories of modern art, architecture and design. Recent exhibitions and publications across the world explored Jugendstil's key protagonists and artistic centres to firmly anchor their activities within the trajectories of German modernism. Women, however, continue to be largely absent from these revisionist accounts. This book offers a new interpretation of this vibrant period, advocating women as an integral part of the emergence, dissemination and reception of Jugendstil and questioning the deeply gendered histories of this key period in modern art, architecture and design"--(Provided by publisher.)

Attention is fundamental to how we experience reality, and yet this notion has been understood and practised in very different ways across history. This interdisciplinary study explores the dynamic relationship between attention and its supposed opposite, distraction, as it unfolds from the eighteenth century to the present day. Its primary focus is on twentieth-century Germany and Austria, where matters of (in)attention gained a unique urgency during a period of social change and political crisis. 00Building on Enlightenment practices of self-observation, nineteenth-century Germany was the birthplace of experimental psychology, a discipline which sought to measure and potentially enhance human attention. This approach was also adopted outside the psychological laboratory-for instance in the First World War, when psychological testing was used to select soldiers for particular strategic positions. After the war these techniques filtered through into everyday life. Weimar Germany was unique in the western world in rolling out the methods of 'psychotechnics' across civilian society-in fields such as work and education, advertising and mass entertainment. This state-sponsored programme aimed to reshape people's minds and behaviour in order to build a more efficient, streamlined society.00But as this study shows, this initiative also had profound repercussions in the fields of thought, literature, and culture. New readings of leading writers and intellectuals of the period-Kafka, Musil, Kracauer, Benjamin, and Adorno-are interspersed with broader cultural-historical chapters dedicated to the history of psychology and psychiatry, to Weimar self-help literature, portrait photography, and musical culture.

Zusammenfassung: "Focusing on English and German texts and the intricate relationships between them, this book seeks to reread-or, perhaps better, re-sound-sublimity through the lens of music, from the sublime's rise to prominence in the later seventeenth century, through the upheavals associated with Kant in the late eighteenth century and their reverberations in the nineteenth century. Closely reading a series of canonical and little-known literary and critical texts in dialogue with musical cultures, the book offers new perspectives on the sublime as a transdisciplinary, transmedial, and transcultural phenomenon. In doing so, it argues for the importance of sonic models to the sublime; it traces harmonious, discordant, and resolutely silent varieties of sublimity; and it suggests resonances between past sublimes and current aesthetics and ethics"--(Provided by publisher.)

Zusammenfassung: "In re-evaluating the contemporary staging of madness in the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries this book provides a clearer understanding and interpretation of characters who suffer from mental and emotional extremities in Shakespearean drama. It addresses three factors that contribute to early modern concepts of madness. These are theories of the 'self' current and emergent in the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries; contemporary medical writings on madness; and the legacy of portrayals of madness from classical Greek and Roman drama, with a particular focus on the Roman tragedian, Seneca. The more complete understanding that this combined approach provides facilitates a better-informed reading of Shakespeare's plays, plays that so often deal with mental and emotional extremities that were once thought of as 'madness'. Hamlet, Ophelia, Lady Macbeth, King Lear, Edgar, Othello, even Antipholous and Malvolio, are all characters for whom this work provides a better understanding"--(Provided by publisher.)
