Mittels zahlreicher, ästhetisch schöner und teilweise höchst seltener kartographischer Darstellungen vornehmlich des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts führt es durch die Geschichte unseres Erdteils und stellt einige Fragen neu: Was ist Europa? Was macht diesen Kontinent aus? Wo liegen seine Grenzen? Die großen Kartographen der Neuzeit, etwa Martin Waldseemüller, Gerhard Mercator, Abraham Ortelius oder Willem Blaeu, haben ihre ganz eigenen Antworten gegeben. Mittels zahlreicher, ästhetisch schöner und teilweise höchst seltener kartographischer Darstellungen vornehmlich des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts führt es durch die Geschichte unseres Erdteils und stellt einige Fragen neu: Was ist Europa? Was macht diesen Kontinent aus? Wo liegen seine Grenzen? Die großen Kartographen der Neuzeit, etwa Martin Waldseemüller, Gerhard Mercator, Abraham Ortelius oder Willem Blaeu, haben ihre ganz eigenen Antworten gegeben. Bei ihren Darstellungen des Kontinents ebenso wie seiner Teilgebiete präsentieren sie Europa als politisch vielfältiges Gebilde, dessen kulturellen Reichtum sie auf manchmal nahezu künstlerisch anmutende Weise beizukommen versuchten. Mythos und historische Überlieferung, kartographische Akkuratesse und Propaganda verschmolzen auf ihren Karten zu einer Einheit.
