    Les gouvernements et les acteurs politiques nationaux mettent en œuvre des politiques de la mémoire. Le fait n'est pas nouveau, mais la fréquence et l'intensité de ce type d'action publique semblent croître depuis une trentaine d'années. Le constat peut paraître paradoxal : entre l'éclatement du passé commun mis à mal par la crise de l'État-Nation et l'évanouissement de tout avenir radieux, l'échelon national peut-il encore promouvoir de grandes mythologies collectives, ou même mener une politique symbolique ? L'ouvrage s'attache à répondre à ces questions en analysant la construction des politiques du passé par les pouvoirs publics et par certains acteurs politiques nationaux. Les premiers, aux prises avec les zones d'ombre de la mémoire nationale, créent de nouvelles commémorations et s'essaient à dire le juste et le vrai en matière d'histoire. Ce faisant, ils répondent à une demande sociale qui, souvent contradictoire, les contraint à négocier la redéfinition du passé. Quant aux autres acteurs nationaux, ils revisitent aussi leur histoire pour consolider ou refonder leur identité. Fondé sur des études empiriques, ce livre est une contribution à la réflexion contemporaine sur la question des régimes d'historicité et des rapports entre histoire et mémoire.
