    Den 54 ostdeutschen Hochschulen wird häufig attestiert, sich nur unzureichend mit ihrer eigenen Vergangenheit in der DDR auseinanderzusetzen. Nicht nur während der politischen Umbrüche 1989 hätten sie abseits gestanden. Vielmehr sei auch in den Jahren danach kaum etwas unternommen worden, um ihre Rolle in der DDR glaubhaft und kritisch aufzuklären. Durchweg fehle der Wille zur Aufarbeitung. Solche Kritiken formulieren Eindrücke, nicht die Ergebnisse von Analysen. Eine solche wird hier nun vorgelegt. Die genauere Prüfung ergibt ein differenzierteres Bild. So haben die Hochschulen seit 1990 über 500 Bücher zu ihrer DDR-Geschichte veröffentlicht und fast einhundert Ausstellungen organisiert. Angesichts dessen lässt sich kaum davon sprechen, dass eine allgemeine zeitgeschichtliche Inaktivität dominiert. Probleme gibt es gleichwohl. Die häufigsten Anlässe für entsprechende Initiativen sind Hochschuljubiläen, Skandalisierungen mit zeitgeschichtlichem Bezug und starkes persönliches Engagement einzelner Akteure. Darin liegt ein Teil der Erklärung für die fehlende Kontinuität zeithistorischer Aktivitäten. Ein weiterer Grund ist, dass Darstellungen der Hochschulgeschichte typischerweise als Bestandteil der Imagebildung aufgefasst werden. Dementsprechend zielen sie auf die Vermittlung einer positiven Identität und eines vorteilhaften Images. Daher werden Konfliktthemen häufig abgeblendet. Ein dritter Teil der Erklärung schließlich liegt im Organisationscharakter der Hochschulen. Zwar lassen Hochschulen organisationspolitisch eine intensive Befassung mit ihrer Zeitgeschichte erwarten: Auf diesem Wege ist Legitimation zu gewinnen, können Jubiläen inhaltlich aufgewertet werden und kann Havarien in der Kommunikation mit der Öffentlichkeit vorgebeugt werden. Doch organisationspraktisch überwiegen die Gründe dafür, dass eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der eigenen Zeitgeschichte eher selten erfolgt: Wissenschaftsfreiheit, individuelle Autonomie der Wissenschaftler/innen, geringe Chancen der Reputationssteigerung durch lokal bezogene Aktivitäten, mangelnde Durchgriffsmöglichkeiten von Hochschulleitungen auf das wissenschaftliche Personal, Konflikte um ohnehin nicht auskömmliche Finanzmittel und sonstige Ressourcen, Planungsresistenz und chaotisches Entscheidungsverhalten als hochschulischer Normalzustand - all das steht dem entgegen.     Die in vielen Museen der DDR präsentierte „Geschichte der Urgesellschaft" war ein fester Bestandteil des nationalen Geschichtsbilds des „Arbeiter- und Bauernstaats" und unterstützte die historische Legitimierung der SED-Diktatur. Allerdings besaß die sozialistische Urgeschichtserzählung mit dem in der NS-Zeit propagierten Bild der „Germanischen Vorzeit" ein ideologisch hoch belastetes Erbe. Die Museen standen angesichts des politisch verordneten Antifaschismus vor der Aufgabe, in ihren Ausstellungen den narrativen Turn vom „germanischen" zum marxistischen Urgeschichtsbild zu meistern. Entlang eines umfangreichen Korpus an Ausstellungsfotos analysiert die Studie die museale Darstellung der Urgeschichte in der SBZ und DDR sowie die Diskurse, die zum Wandel oder zur Beständigkeit von Geschichtsbildern führten.
