    Im Jahr 9 n. Chr. eint der Cherusker Hermann die germanischen Stämme gegen die römische Besatzungsmacht. Hochgerüstet, aber in den germanischen Wäldern ohne Ortskenntnis, verlieren die Römer die Orientierung. Ihre Heeresordnung löst sich auf, Wind und Wetter kommen den Germanen zur Hilfe. Es ist eine vernichtende Niederlage, die die Römer erleben und die den Cheruskerfürsten Hermann zum Volkshelden werden lässt. So zumindest will es der Mythos von der Hermannsschlacht. Diese Arbeit folgt dem Weg in den Wald: Sie untersucht die sprachlichliterarischen Verfahren, mit denen die deutsche Nation im Rückgriff auf den Mythos Hermannsschlacht im 18. Jahrhundert erfunden wird. Dabei stehen die diskursbestimmenden Kategorien Familie, Herrschaft, Freundschaft und Religion im Zentrum der Analyse. Das Korpus bilden die Hermannsschlacht-Dramen von Schlegel, Möser und Klopstock; sie werden ergänzt durch zahlreiche philosophische und populärwissenschaftliche Texte zum Nationalen. Die Studie findet ihren Fluchtpunkt in Carl Schmitts „Begriff des Politischen“, um das radikale Entweder-oder, das dem nation building innewohnt, nachzuzeichnen, und im Verweis auf Derridas „Politik der Freundschaft“ diese politische Unausweichlichkeit in all ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit aufzuzeigen und zu zerstören.
