    The Ars Amatoria is a poem about sex and poetry, and poetry as sex. Witty and subversive, it is a poem of seduction about seduction: the seduction of the 'implied' reader being initiated into the art of love, and ourselves, as we are seduced by the poet into the act of reading the poem This book offers a new and sophisticated critical assessment of the poem, based on the close analysis of certain passages, whilst at the same time being concerned with the reading of Ovidian poetry generally. Dr Sharrock's study is overtly theoretical, influenced in particular by deconstruction and reader-response theory, with an emphasis on intertextuality In it she discusses a range of original and important issues: the traditions of didactic poetry and of elegy; the nature of the addressee in literature; the relationship between author and reader, speaker, and addressee; poetic self-display; digression and relevance; programmatic theory and poetic value under the sign of Callimachus. This is an important and innovative work, which should be of interest not only to classicists but also to literary critics and theorists in English and other literatures

    In stilistischen Untersuchungen zu zwei antiken Lehrgedichten (Ovids Ars amatoria und Vergils Georgica) wird dem Verhältnis von Satz- und Versstruktur unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Intention und Rezeption nachgegangen. Ziel der Interpretationen ist es, die didaktische Einwirkung des Dichters auf den Leser in der besonderen Gestaltung des Inhalts z.B. über die Gliederungsmöglichkeiten des Distichons, zu analysieren. Ein systematischer Teil stellt die verschiedenen Bauformen des Distichons und ihre Funktionen dar.

    Die Autorin interpretiert die 'Ars amatoria' als Lehrgedicht in elegischer Tradition. Zum ersten Mal wird der Lehrgang für Männer dem Text folgend nachvollzogen; ein Blick auf das 3. Buch erweist, daß Ovid dort dieselben Ziele verfolgt: Mit großem didaktischem Geschick führt er seine Schüler zu einer glücklichen, dauerhaften Liebesbeziehung nach elegischen Idealen. Er übernimmt Konzepte, die den Charakter elegischer Liebe bestimmen, wandelt sie aber so ab, daß seine Schüler nicht leiden müssen. Als 'milites amoris' sind sie keine Außenseiter. Im Gegensatz zum elegischen servus amoris lassen sie sich nicht von einer übermächtigen Frau beherrschen. Sie erstreben keinen eheähnlichen, ewigen Treuebund ('foedus aeternum'), sondern tiefe gegenseitige Zuneigung, die auf Diskretion und gemeinsam erlebter Lust beruht. Die Damen lernen, sich mit der Aura einer elegischen 'domina' zu umgeben, ohne ihre Liebhaber auszubeuten und zu quälen.
