    Main description: Als "innerweltliche Askese" beschrieb Max Weber die reformierte Religion und Lebensführung. Für deutsche und "frankophone" Texte (Lehrbücher, Essays, Periodika, Reden/Rededramen, philosophische Romane) des ausgehenden 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt diese vergleichende, literatur- und denkgeschichtliche Untersuchung, daß die Beschreibung Webers zwar zutrifft, aber zu kurz greift. Reformierte Morallehren stehen nicht nur am aufklärerischen (Wieder-)Beginn der deutschen Literatur, sondern prüfen die eigene Moral bereits "empirisch" und im Mittel der Literatur, um ihre Grenzen aufzuzeigen

    Das Lehrgedicht des 18. Jahrhunderts gilt als eine der charakteristischen literarischen Erscheinungen der Aufklärung, hat in der Forschung aber nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit gefunden. So gibt es bisher noch keine komparatistische Untersuchung dieses Gegenstands, obwohl bekannt ist, dass viele Lehrgedichte international eine große Wirkung ausübten. Die Studie nimmt sich dieses Desiderats an und analysiert repräsentative Lehrgedichte der deutschen, englischen und französischen Literatur; die Reihe der behandelten Autoren reicht von John Dryden bis Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Die leitenden Fragen zielen auf die rhetorischen Verfahren der Gedichte, auf ihre Arten der Wissensverarbeitung und auf ihre prägenden Kontexte. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass das Lehrgedicht jener Zeit nicht, wie oft angenommen wird, in erster Linie ein Instrument der Popularisierung philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen Wissens war. In seinen einflussreichsten Manifestationen gestaltete es vielmehr den Anspruch des Einzelnen, selbstständig eine sinnstiftende Deutung des Weltganzen zu entwerfen. Damit eröffnet die Studie auch eine neue Sicht auf die Beziehung zwischen dem Lehrgedicht des 18. Jahrhunderts und der um 1800 aufkommenden philosophischen Lyrik.

    Didactic poems are among the most influential literary genres of the European Enlightenment. This comparative study examines representative didactic poems from 18th century German, English, and French literature, analyzes their objectives and processes, and situates them in their epistemological and cultural historical contexts. Moreover, it shows that these poems continued to have an impact beyond the 18th century.
