La philologie se traduit par un retour réfléchi aux sources, entrepris dans une perspective que l’on peut déjà qualifier d’"historique" : la tradition cesse d’être le lieu d’une autorité incontestable pour devenir l’objet d’un examen critique. Les humanistes sont ainsi, par le biais de la philologie, les premiers véritables historiens de la philosophie : plus que des thèses immuables, les différents mouvements de pensée lèguent des problèmes et des objets de controverse. Ainsi, être "platonicien" ou "aristotélicien" ne signifie pas adhérer inconditionnellement à une "école" ou à une "secte", mais s’insérer dans une tradition de pensée où la restitution et l’interprétation de ses œuvres vont de pair avec l’autonomie du jugement critique et le renouvellement de la réflexion.

    This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to concepts of the self associated with the development of humanism in England, and to strategies for both inclusion and exclusion in structuring the early modern nation state. It addresses writings about rhetoric and behavior from 1495-1660, beginning with Erasmus' work on sermo or the conversational rhetoric between friends, which considers the reader as an 'absent audience', and following the transference of this stance to a politics whose broadening democratic constituency needed a legitimate structure for governance-at-a-distance. Unusually, the book brings together the impact on behavior of these new concepts about rhetoric, with the growth of the publishing industry, and the emergence of capitalism and of modern medicine. It explores the effects on the formation of the 'subject' and political legitimation of the early liberal nation state. It also lays new ground for scholarship concerned with what is left out of both selfhood and politics by that state, studying examples of a parallel development of the 'self' defined by friendship not only from educated male writers, but also from women writers and writers concerned with socially 'middling' and laboring people and the poor.

    In der Frühen Neuzeit verliert das überlieferte Wissen seine Orientierungsfunktion. Die kontingente, zur Zukunft hin offene Wirklichkeit bedeutet neue Freiheit, aber zugleich den Verlust der Geborgenheit in einer übersichtlichen Welt. Erkennen und Handeln müssen neu begründet werden. Das Buch ist ein Beitrag zu einer Kulturgeschichte der Fantasie. Die Frühe Neuzeit ist ein Laboratorium des erkennenden und seine Erkenntnis reflektierenden Subjekts. Sie entwickelt die Verfahren des spielerischen Erprobens, der Hypothese, des Experiments. Die neue Form des Wissens entsteht im Zusammenspiel aller kulturellen Bereiche, die erst in diesem Prozess ihre moderne Gestalt gewinnen. Dies gilt auch für Kunst und Literatur. Die großen literarischen Texte, Montaigne, Cervantes, Shakespeare, haben entscheidenden Teil an diesem Prozess. Charakteristika der Moderne sind Pluralität und Revidierbarkeit. »Try again. Castellios Forderung nach religiöser Toleranz und sein Protest gegen Verfolgung und Tötung Andersgläubiger sind heute so aktuell wie 1554, als die Hinrichtung Michel Servets vor den Toren Genfs ihm den Anlass dazu gab. Im Zentrum des Sammelbandes steht Castellios anonymer Traktat Über Ketzer und ob man sie verfolgen soll im originalen Kontext. Er stieß Debatten über religiöse Toleranz an, die grundsätzlich für das Selbstverständnis der Protestanten und einer reformatio continua geblieben sind. Aktuelle Kontroversen über Religionsfreiheit und Grenzen der Toleranz handeln mit Argumenten, die Castellio populär gemacht hat. Die Handels- und Universitätsstadt Basel bot ihm beste Bedingungen für die Verbreitung non-konformistischer Ideen. Die Integration von Glaubensflüchtlingen, die das Recht auf Diskussionsfreiheit beanspruchten, war für den Basler Magistrat eine ähnliche Herausforderung wie die Eingliederung von Migranten und Asylanten in Deutschland und der Schweiz heute.Castellios Appell zum Gewaltverzicht ist hochmodern. Er impliziert die Anerkennung moralischer Grundregeln, wie sie später in Naturrechtslehren und der Deklaration der Menschenrechte formuliert worden sind. Er zieht die Grenze religiöser Toleranz dort, wo religiöse Fundamentalisten ihre Vorstellungen mit Gewalt durchsetzen.Auch Castellios übrige Schriften argumentieren für religiöse Toleranz, Willensfreiheit und Gerechtigkeit. Als Philologe bewunderte er Erasmus von Rotterdam. Wie dieser legte er eine neue Übersetzung der Bibel in klassischem Latein vor. Franzosen würdigen ihn wegen seiner französischen Bibelübersetzung als ihren Luther. Von diesem unterschied er sich allerdings durch seine Bibelauslegung, für die er allein die gesunde Vernunft als Sonde empfiehlt. Castellio hatte Verbindungen nach England, Frankreich und den Niederlanden, wo er zusammen mit Täufern wahrgenommen wurde.; Castellio’s plea for religious tolerance and his refusal of prosecution of dissenters are as relevant today as they had been in 1554 when Michel Servet’s burning at the stake occasioned Castellio’s protest. The articles analyze Castellio’s anonymous treaty De haereticis an sint persequendi (in Roland H. Bainton’s translation: Concerning heretics) in the original context and the world of religious dissent around Basel.
