Verlagstext: Dieses Buch gibt einen Überblick über mehr als 150 Jahre Lesesozialisation in der (bürgerlichen) Familie. In drei historischen Querschnitten werden die Bedingungen und Interaktionsformen der Leseerziehung untersucht: Biedermeierzeit (um 1830), Kaiserzeit (um 1900) und Zeit des Eintritts in die Mediengesellschaft (um 1980). Als Quellen der Rekonstruktion dienen in jedem Querschnitt Erziehungsratgeber, Kinderliteratur und autobiographische Quellen bzw. Daten. Die familiale Lesesozialisation erweist sich als ein bis zur Gegenwart bildungsrelevantes Kulturmuster, das in der Biedermeierzeit begründet, in der Kaiserzeit fest etabliert und in den 1980er Jahren stabilisiert wurde. Allerdings zeichnen sich auch die Gegenwartsprobleme ab: In einer Gesellschaft, in der die soziale Schichtung durchlässiger geworden ist, bleibt die Lesesozialisation eine Bastion ungleicher Bildungschancen, und die Familien sind auf die Integration des Lesens in die Vermittlung einer umfassenden Medienkompetenz schlecht vorbereitet.
