    Die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Epigramm, Inschrift und Elegie sind seit längerer Zeit Gegenstand der Forschung. Insbesondere bei den zahlreichen Grabinschriften, die in römischen Elegien wörtlich angeführt werden, wurde bisher oft angenommen, daß es sich schlicht um ein ‚elegisches Motiv´ handle, und daß das Streben nach einem dauerhaften Nachleben des Verstorbenen ein konstitutives Element dieser Inschriften sei. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die in den Elegien des Tibull, Properz und Ovid wörtlich zitierten Inschriften (u.a. Epitaphe, Weih- und Ehren-­inschriften, Bauinschriften, Graffiti und Dipinti) in ihrem literarischen Kon­text und ihren Bezügen zur außerliterarischen Welt. Dabei ergibt sich, daß das Streben nach Dauerhaftigkeit keineswegs das häufigste Motiv für die Verwendung solcher Inschriften ist. Vielmehr erfüllen sie eine Reihe von Funktionen, die für den besonderen elegischen Kontext typisch sind und sich von der Verwendungsweise von Inschriften in anderen Gattungen unterscheiden. Die Studie bietet damit einen Beitrag zur aktuellen Forschungsdiskussion, der sich sowohl an literarisch, als auch an historisch, archäologisch und epigraphisch interessierte Leser richtet.

    This study looks at the funerary inscriptions that are reproduced verbatim in Roman elegy. Through an analysis of quoted inscriptions in the elegies of Tibullus, Propertius, and Ovid, the author places these inscriptions into their literary and societal context. While it has often been assumed that the primary motive for including such inscriptions is to achieve a permanent memorial for the dead, this study argues that the inscriptions instead serve a series of functions that are typical for their specific elegaic context, and that distinguish them from inscriptions in other genres Inschriftentypen -- Die eingelegten Inschriften und die Frage des "Gedächnisses" -- Interpretationen : eingelegte Inschriften in der römischen Elegie -- Ergebnisse
