"Presented by Balzac as the "story of the customs of its time", La Comédie humaine constantly makes references to the historical and literary past. Throughout the Études de moeurs, the Études philosophiques and the Études analytiques a portrait of the "Old Regime" is drawn, placing the 17th Century at the forefront. This book updates the different balzacian uses of the "Grand Siècle", describing its role in La Comédie humaine. Hence, he brings about the "network of the 17th Century" that links together in an original way the multiple narratives of the time. In doing so, he reveals the deep relationship between a principal work of modern fiction and the classical literary tradition."--Page 259
