    Davon ausgehend, daß "Dichtung eine dem Menschen wesentliche Weise der Bearbeitung seiner Lebenswirklichkeit und der Auseinandersetzung mit ihr ist" und in den Darstellungsmitteln sich zugleich die Deutung der Wirklichkeit spiegelt, untersucht Willi Erzgräber (zuletzt ID 12/93) Auswahl und Funktion der Darstellungsmittel in ausgewählten Werken von Conrad, Joyce, V. Woolf, Forster, Lawrence, Waugh, Orwell und Greene. Da Biographie und epochengeschichtliche Faktoren zur Deutung ebenfalls herangezogen werden, bleibt es nicht bei einer rein werkimmanenten Interpretation. So wird an Hand der ausgewählten Autoren und Werke die Entwicklung des englischen Romans in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit seinen unterschiedlichen Wirklichkeitsauffassungen, traditionellen und neuen Erzählhaltungen in unterschiedlicher Ausprägung, verdeutlicht. Bibliographie, Register. Für Anglisten.
