Die Beiträge des Bandes folgen dazu der Spur bestimmter Begriffe wie Urteil, Synthese, Widerstand, Bildung, Berührung, Essay oder Predigt und machen sie als Praktiken ästhetischen Denkens sichtbar. In neun Essays verschieben sie dabei die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Ästhetik, indem sie besonders poetische, visuelle und rhetorische Wirkungen von Gestaltungs-, Schreib- oder Filmarbeiten in den Fokus stellen. Dabei wird deutlich: Das Ästhetische verleiht dem »Wissen«, der »Kritik« oder auch dem »Schöpferischen« einen ebenso befremdlichen wie singulären Sinn.

    Heinrich Theodor Rötscher kondensiert seine staatstheatertheoretischen Überlegungen in seinem in Rotteck und Welckers liberalem Staats-Lexikon 1843 erschienenen Artikel 'Theater und dramatische Poesie'; die Ausrichtung seines Ansatzes auf ein staatliches Gemeinwesen ist hier deutlich. Drama und Theater gehören mit zur Entwicklung eines modernen Staatswesens, sie bedingen seine Herausbildung im dialektischen Prozeß einer organisch operierenden Entwicklung. Dass in dieser Konzeption "der Staat die Idee der Freiheit ist", genügt Rötschers idealistischem Postulat genauso wie es der realen politischen Semantisierung nicht gerecht werden kann (und will). Die uneingeschränkt positive Besprechung der griechischen Demokratie fixiert das Theater als Medium der Darstellung eines "freien Staates". Die Übertragung der antiken demokratischen Verhältnisse auf das Deutschland des Vormärz kommt für Rötscher zunächst nicht in Frage; allein die Kritik am Absolutismus der Monarchie, am Prinzip der "absoluten Monarchie" und ihrem Pendant, dem Hoftheater, findet im Text ihren pejorativen Ausdruck.
